Lake Suwa Fireworks

Nagano · Fireworks festival

Fired from the lake itself, ringed by mountains that throw the sound back across the water.

Suwa is a basin, and that is the whole point. Shells are launched from barges on the lake, the mountains around it return the report a beat later, and the water doubles the light. The result is louder and more physical than a display of the same size fired over a city. The signature piece is the Kiagari Suisha, a set of shells fired low and fast across the surface, and the finale runs a curtain of fire down a length of the shoreline. Because the date is fixed to 15 August, it lands in the Obon holiday and the town is full.

Getting a good spot

Accommodation in Suwa books out months ahead for 15 August because of Obon. Staying in Matsumoto or Chino and taking the train in is the usual workaround, though the last trains out are packed.
