Oyama Shrine enshrines Maeda Toshiie, the founding lord of the Kaga domain, and his wife Matsu. It is best known for its Shinmon, a three-story front gate completed in 1875 that combines Japanese, Chinese and European design elements and is designated an Important Cultural Property. The upper level holds panes of coloured Dutch glass, and the gate is said to carry one of Japan's oldest surviving lightning rods. The grounds include a strolling garden with ponds and bridges laid out in the Edo period. Entry to the shrine is free, and it stands within walking distance of central Kanazawa and Kanazawa Castle.
