Kimii-dera stands on the slope of Mount Nagusa overlooking Wakayama Bay. Founded in 770, it is the second temple on the Saigoku Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage. Its name refers to three sacred wells on the grounds that still produce spring water. Visitors climb a flight of 231 stone steps, or use the cable car and elevator, to reach the main hall and a large gilded standing Kannon statue. The cherry trees here bloom earlier than most in the Kansai region and have long served as a marker for the local blossom season. From the upper terrace there are views across the bay and the city.
