Zakimi Castle stands above Yomitan in central Okinawa. Built by Gosamaru around 1420, it is associated with the period when power was being consolidated across the island. The palace buildings have disappeared, but the remaining stone architecture makes this compact castle an unusually clear place to study the design of a Ryukyuan gusuku.

Walk through the arched gateways and follow the curves of the walls. Their rounded projections and carefully fitted stones are practical defensive choices as well as striking forms. The courtyards reveal how access was controlled, while views beyond the walls place the stronghold in the surrounding landscape. Keep to designated visitor routes rather than assuming that every wall edge is open to walking.

Zakimi is part of Okinawa’s Ryukyu World Heritage property. The nearby Yuntanza Museum adds exhibits on local history and culture and has its own admission arrangements. Combine the ruins and museum for a fuller visit, or pair the castle with time in Yomitan’s pottery district. Bus access still requires a walk, so allow time for that connection.
