# Yuzuki Castle Ruins

> Inside Dogo Park, Yuzuki preserves the moats and earthworks of the Kono family’s medieval stronghold. Reconstructed residences and archaeological displays reveal castle life before Matsuyama’s later hilltop keep, a short walk from the hot-spring district.

Yuzuki Castle occupied the low hill now enclosed by Dogo Park. It was the base of the Kono family, the medieval rulers of Iyo, and its remains offer a different chapter of local history from the later Matsuyama Castle across the city. Here the emphasis is on earth, water and residential spaces rather than a towering keep.

Two lines of moats and substantial earthen defenses survive around the hill. Reconstructed samurai residences and displays based on excavation help explain how people lived inside those boundaries. Examine the earthworks alongside the restored buildings to distinguish the medieval remains from the modern interpretation of daily life. The hilltop viewpoint adds a wider sense of the surrounding Matsuyama landscape.

The site is easy to combine with Dogo’s hot-spring streets, but it deserves more than a quick shortcut through the park. Use the nearby tram stop and allow time for the museum as well as the outdoor circuit. Exhibition facilities have their own opening calendar, so a park visit and an indoor visit should be planned separately.
