For twenty-one years this was the tallest building in Japan. Completed in 1993 at 296.3 metres, it held the title until Abeno Harukas passed it in 2014, and it still defines the Minato Mirai skyline from every angle in Yokohama.

The lift to the Sky Garden on the 69th floor climbs at 750 metres a minute and held a world record when it opened. It covers 273 metres in about forty seconds, quietly enough that the display counting the floors is the only way you know how fast you are moving. At the top the view runs 360 degrees: the harbour and the Bay Bridge, the Yokohama grid, Tokyo's towers to the north, and on a clear winter afternoon Mount Fuji sitting on the western horizon. Winter mornings after rain are the reliable window for Fuji. Summer haze usually hides it.

Tickets are around 1,000 yen. Sunset fills the place and the glass picks up reflections after dark, so bring something dark to hold against the window if you want photographs.

Underneath, Landmark Plaza is a large mall, and behind it is the better piece of the site: Dockyard Garden, the stone dry dock built in 1896, restored as a sunken plaza and designated an Important Cultural Property. Events happen down in the dock and it is free to walk through.

Everything else in Minato Mirai is within fifteen minutes on foot. The Nippon Maru sailing ship is moored beside the tower, the Cup Noodles Museum and the Air Cabin gondola line are close, and the red brick warehouses are a walk along the water. The tower is the landmark you navigate by.

From JR/Subway Sakuragicho Station, walk 5 minutes via the elevated 'Moving Walk' moving sidewalk that runs through the Minatomirai entrance.
