# Ueda Castle

> The Sanada clan’s stronghold is remembered for resisting the Tokugawa armies twice. Today Ueda’s stone walls, three turrets and restored East Gate form an atmospheric castle park within walking distance of the shinkansen station.

- Prefecture: Nagano
- Type: Castle
- Address: Ueda, Nagano, Japan

Ueda Castle is closely associated with the Sanada clan, whose defense against the Tokugawa armies made this small Nagano castle town famous. Founded in the sixteenth century, the stronghold was subsequently dismantled and partly rebuilt under later rulers. The buildings visible today therefore tell several chapters of the site’s history rather than preserving the Sanada castle unchanged.

Three turrets, substantial stone walls and the restored East Gate frame the approach to the inner grounds. There is no main keep to climb. Instead, walk along the edges of the defenses and through the park to see how the remaining structures relate to the castle’s footprint. The turrets and museum offer further historical context when open.

The surrounding park is particularly lively during cherry blossom season, but the masonry and gate are rewarding throughout the year. Ueda Station is a short walk away, making this an easy stop on a rail journey through Nagano. Leave enough time for the grounds as well as indoor exhibitions, whose opening arrangements should be checked separately.
