# Tottori Castle Ruins

> Stone terraces climb Mount Kyusho above Tottori, preserving the outline of a castle famous for Hideyoshi’s 1581 siege. The lower grounds offer a gentle park visit, while the higher ruins turn the outing into a wooded hill walk.

Tottori Castle spread across Mount Kyusho at the edge of today’s city center. Its history includes the siege of 1581, when Hideyoshi’s forces cut off supplies and forced the defenders to surrender. Later development created an extensive castle complex whose stone terraces still make a strong impression against the wooded hillside.

There is no intact keep to enter. The remaining walls, platforms and approaches are the main attraction, and the lower grounds can be explored as part of Kyusho Park. Looking uphill from here helps explain the difference between a castle’s administrative spaces at the foot of a mountain and its more demanding defensive positions above. Cherry blossoms add a softer layer to the masonry in spring.

Choose your route before setting off: a lower-park visit and a climb to the upper ruins require different amounts of time and effort. Wear shoes suited to uneven paths if continuing uphill. From Tottori Station, reach the area by bus or on foot, then leave time to examine the stonework rather than rushing straight toward the summit.
