# Sendai Castle Ruins

> Above Sendai on wooded Aobayama, Date Masamune’s former stronghold combines imposing stone walls with an expansive city view. The mounted statue marks the familiar panorama, while the surviving castle landscape reveals the hill’s defensive importance.

Sendai Castle occupied a commanding site on Aobayama, above the Hirose River and the city founded by Date Masamune. Also called Aoba Castle, it used the hill’s steep terrain as part of its defenses. The setting helps explain why the lord chose this location as the center of his domain at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

Today the visit is to a castle site rather than a surviving palace or keep. Stone walls, the shape of the hill and interpretation around the grounds give the strongest sense of the former stronghold. The equestrian statue of Masamune faces the modern city, making a useful stopping point to compare the river, streets and distant skyline with the defensive landscape below.

Leave time to look beyond the statue and follow the permitted paths around the site. The climb from the lower city is substantial, so a sightseeing bus is a practical option for visitors who prefer to save their walking for the summit. Check current access arrangements before choosing a route up Aobayama.
