Sefa-utaki is not a building. It is a patch of forest on a limestone headland in Nanjo, in the south-east of Okinawa Island, with prayer sites set against rock walls and under overhangs. In the Ryukyu Kingdom it ranked as the holiest place in the country, and the ceremony that installed the Kikoe-ogimi, the high priestess who served beside the king, was held here. Three of its prayer sites share their names with rooms in Shuri Castle, which tells you how closely the two were tied. It is one of the nine parts of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, inscribed as World Heritage in 2000.

You do not buy a ticket at the forest. The ticket machine is at the Nanjo City regional products centre on Route 331, where the car park and bus stop are, and from there you walk about 500 metres, 7 to 10 minutes, to the Midori-no-Yakata gatehouse. Beyond it the path is slippery stone paving with a steep climb to Ufuguui, the first prayer site, and handrails only in places. Wheelchairs and pushchairs cannot go in. Sanguui, at the far end, is the picture on every poster: two huge slabs leaning together to form a triangular passage. A fence now stands at its entrance and nobody may go through, so you look at it from the front. To one side, a worship spot faces Kudaka Island, where Ryukyu myth says the creation goddess came down.

People still pray here. Keep your voice down, cover shoulders and legs as far as the heat allows, and do not take stones or plants. High heels are swapped for loan sandals at the entrance. Allow 50 to 60 minutes including the walk from the ticket office.

Check two things before you go. The site closes completely for six days a year by the old lunar calendar: in 2026 that is 9 to 11 November. And drainage repairs run until 5 January 2027. From 2 November 2026 entry is free, but you can only go as far as Ujoguchi, the old gateway, and the Kudaka Island worship spot.

## FAQ

### On which days is Sefa-utaki closed?

Yes. On the first three days of the fifth and tenth months of the old lunar calendar nobody may enter, so the dates move every year. The official site lists 9 to 11 November 2026, then 5 to 7 June and 29 to 31 October 2027. It can also close without notice in bad weather. Otherwise it is open every day: 9:00 to 18:00 from March to October (tickets until 17:15) and 9:00 to 17:30 from November to February (tickets until 16:45).

### How much of the site can I see during the repair work?

Nanjo city is replacing drainage along the stone path in two stages. Until 1 November 2026 the branch to Yuinchi is closed and the normal fee applies. From 2 November 2026 to 5 January 2027 the path beyond Ujoguchi is closed, entry is free, and you can reach only Ujoguchi and the Kudaka Island worship spot; people who come to pray do so from Ujoguchi. Visitors during the work are given a pilgrimage certificate. Even with no work going on, you cannot pass the fence at the entrance to Sanguui.

### Do I need to book, and can I join a guided tour?

Individual visitors do not book; you buy a ticket from the machine at the ticket office by the regional products centre. Local guides lead walks of about 60 minutes between 9:00 and 16:00: 2,000 yen for one or two people, 1,000 yen each for three to 19. Book through Midori-no-Yakata (098-949-1899) by 17:00 two days before.
