# Nakijin Castle Ruins

> Long, curving stone walls cross the wooded hills of northern Okinawa at the former seat of the Hokuzan kingdom. Nakijin’s World Heritage ruins offer a powerful introduction to the island’s history before the unified Ryukyu Kingdom.

Nakijin Castle was the stronghold of Hokuzan, the northern kingdom that competed with Chuzan and Nanzan before Okinawa’s unification. Its fall in 1416 marked a turning point in that struggle. On the wooded Motobu Peninsula, the scale of the surviving walls still conveys the authority of a court that once governed northern Okinawa.

The visit is to an open-air ruin, with no reconstructed palace or Japanese-style keep. Curving walls made from hard local limestone follow the contours of the hill, enclosing spaces where buildings once stood. Moving through these courtyards offers changing views of the masonry and the surrounding landscape, making the route itself more revealing than a single viewpoint.

Nakijin is one of the castle sites included in Okinawa’s Ryukyu World Heritage property. Early cherry blossoms add color during the island’s winter flowering season. Bring suitable shoes for the stone paths and plan the road journey carefully: the bus stop is below the site, and the final walk is separate from the bus ride. Check the return service before exploring.
