# Mount Tokachi

> A 2,077 m active volcano at the south end of the Tokachi range, climbed from the Bogakudai car park at about 930 m, with a free mixed-bathing rock pool at Fukiage Onsen on its slope. Whether you can climb at all depends on the Japan Meteorological Agency's eruption alert level, so check it before you go.

- Prefecture: Hokkaido
- Type: Mountain
- Address: Biei, Hokkaido, Japan
- Closed: Since September 12, 2026 the alert has been at level 3, and entry is barred within about 3 km of the 62-2 crater.
- Hours note: There is no gate or opening time. How close you may go is set by the Japan Meteorological Agency's eruption alert level, so check its Tokachidake page before you go.

From the Bogakudai car park, about 930 m up on the Biei side, the slope above is bare grey scree with steam rising from the 62-2 crater, and there is not a tree in sight. Mount Tokachi reaches 2,077 m and is watched more closely than most volcanoes in Hokkaido, for good reason: in 1926 an eruption melted the snow and sent a mudflow down to the farms of Kamifurano, killing 144 people. The usual route goes from Bogakudai past the Tokachidake refuge to the summit ridge, roughly 10 km there and back with about 1,100 m of climbing, all on loose volcanic ground with no shade. Whether you can do it is decided by the Japan Meteorological Agency's eruption alert level. At level 1 the mountain is open, though you should still keep away from the crater. Level 2 closes the area around the crater, and level 3 bars entry to the mountain, which ends any climb from Bogakudai. Check the agency's Tokachidake page before you go. Over on the Kamifurano side, a five-minute walk through the forest from the Hakuginso spa lodge, Fukiage Roten no Yu is a free mixed-bathing rock pool with no changing room; most women wear a swimsuit or a towel.

## FAQ

### Can I climb Mount Tokachi right now?

It depends on the Japan Meteorological Agency's eruption alert level. At level 1 the mountain is open, level 2 closes the area around the crater, and level 3 bars entry to the mountain, which rules out the climb from Bogakudai. Check the agency's Tokachidake page before you go.

### How hard is the climb from Bogakudai?

Expect roughly 10 km there and back with about 1,100 m of climbing from Bogakudai at about 930 m to the 2,077 m summit. The ground is loose volcanic gravel with no shade or water, and the weather on the ridge changes fast.

### Is Fukiage Roten no Yu really free, and is it mixed bathing?

Yes on both counts. It is an unstaffed rock pool about five minutes on foot from the Hakuginso lodge, with no changing room and no soap or towels, so most women bathe in a swimsuit or a wrapped towel. Its access, too, depends on the eruption alert level.
