Namerikawa is one of the main ports for firefly squid, the thumb-sized hotaruika that glow blue when they rise to the surface of Toyama Bay in spring. Wave Park Namerikawa sits on the shore beside the fishing port, and the Hotaruika Museum is the reason most people pull in. The live glowing display runs only from 20 March to 31 May. Visit outside that window and you get the exhibits, a lower admission fee and far fewer people.

Panorama Restaurant Kosai is on the museum’s second floor, with windows facing the bay and squid dishes on the menu. The souvenir market sells boiled and marinated firefly squid and other Toyama seafood to take home. The restaurant closes at 18:00, so this is a lunch or early dinner stop rather than an evening one.

From June to mid-March the museum and restaurant close on Tuesdays (the following day after a holiday), plus three days from the last Monday of January. Namerikawa Station is a short walk away if you are not driving. Check the operator’s calendar before a special trip.
