Locals call this part of Route 207 the Tara Kaki-yaki Kaido, the oyster-grilling road, because more than ten huts along it serve oysters cooked over coals. Most open for the winter season, roughly November to March, though a few stay open all year and prices vary from hut to hut. The roadside station sits in the middle of it, right on the Ariake Sea.

Tarafuku-kan, the market, sells vegetables and mandarins grown under Mount Tara alongside fish and shellfish landed in the Ariake Sea. Takezaki crab and Takezaki oysters, the town's best-known catches, turn up here in season.

Ryoshi-no-Yakata, the restaurant, does oyster barbecue, seafood champon and crab kamameshi. If you are driving down from Kashima, this is the natural place to stop before the road continues south toward Takezaki and the Nagasaki border.
