You cannot miss Michi-no-Eki Takachiho. Two enormous faces, Ame-no-Uzume and Tajikarao from the Takachiho yokagura night dances, look out over the car park beside the Shinto Takachiho Ohashi bridge on Route 218. The station opened in 2003 and is the practical base for a town built around the myth of the hidden sun goddess.

The shop sells local vegetables and processed foods, tea and wood and bamboo crafts, including kagura masks. In the restaurant, chicken nanban and a Takachiho beef bowl are the dishes people order most, and the prefecture also points to dago-jiru, a local dumpling soup. The tourist information corner has pamphlets and event details.

Takachiho Gorge is about five minutes away by car, and Takachiho Shrine, with its nightly kagura performance, is also close. Both are separate sites with their own parking and fees. Restaurant hours vary between sources and it may close early when ingredients run out, so eat early if this is your lunch stop.
