Kadena is the only roadside station in Japan where the main view is a military airfield. The building stands across the road from the fence of Kadena Air Base, and the observation deck on the fourth floor looks over its runways. Binoculars are provided. Fighter jets and other aircraft come and go, but the flying schedule is the military’s, so a quiet hour is entirely possible.

Take the noise seriously if you have small children with you. One floor down, the learning exhibition room covers the history of Kadena town and the realities of a town where most of the land is taken up by the base. Schools use it for peace education, and it gives the view upstairs some needed context.

The ground floor has souvenirs, takeout food counters and the town’s tourist information desk, with more food on the second floor. The station was renovated in 2022 with a larger deck and new restaurants. Tenants change, and the official site has at times listed the produce counter as closed, so check before you count on shopping.
