# Michi-no-Eki Hakone Toge

> Kanagawa's first michi-no-eki, opened in 1995 at Hakone Pass on Route 1, close to the Shizuoka border. It is small: a rest room, a snack corner and a souvenir shelf. The point is the view over Lake Ashi, and Mount Fuji on a clear day.

Hakone Toge is the kind of stop you make for the view rather than the shopping. Opened on 30 May 1995, it was the first michi-no-eki in Kanagawa, and it sits at Hakone Pass where Route 1 crosses toward Mishima in Shizuoka. Lake Ashi and the Hakone hills spread out below the car park.

Inside there is a rest room with traffic and tourist information, a snack corner serving soba and udon, and a souvenir counter. Look for Hakone yosegi marquetry, the patterned wood inlay that the area is known for, and the local vegetables that turn up on the shelves. The prefecture renovated the ageing building after it passed thirty years of use.

Weather at the pass changes fast, and Mount Fuji only shows itself on clear days. The snack corner closes earlier than the rest room, and Route 1 over the pass can be closed in heavy rain. Treat it as a quick break with a view, not a lunch destination.
