Tokyo is not where most people expect to find a michi-no-eki, which is half the appeal of this one. Hachioji Takiyama opened on 1 April 2007 as the first roadside station in the capital. It sits on the western edge of the city, a few minutes from Hachioji IC, so it works as a first or last stop on a drive toward Okutama, Yamanashi or the Chichibu hills.

Farm Takiyama, the produce market, is the main reason to go. Morning-picked vegetables from Hachioji growers fill the shelves, and in season you may find local heirloom crops such as Hachioji ginger and Kawaguchi peas. Milk Ice MO-MO makes gelato and soft serve with milk from Kaneko Farm in Hachioji. The Saishokuan food court serves Hachioji ramen, the local soy sauce style topped with chopped onion.

The car park is modest for a station this close to an expressway. Shops and counters keep their own hours, and the gelato counter has regular closing days. If you are coming for one particular thing, check the official site before you set off.
