# Matsumae Castle

> Hokkaido’s northern frontier history comes into focus at Matsumae Castle, where an original gate and reconstructed keep overlook the Tsugaru Strait. The surrounding park adds an unusually varied display of cherry blossoms in spring.

Matsumae Castle looks across the Tsugaru Strait from the southern edge of Hokkaido. Completed in 1854, it belongs to the final years of shogunal rule, when the arrival of foreign ships made coastal defense an urgent concern. Its Japanese castle architecture offers a striking contrast to the Western-style fortifications later built at Hakodate.

The keep is a reconstruction, while the Honmaru Omon gate survives from the original castle and is designated an Important Cultural Property. Inside the museum, armor and displays about maritime trade connect the fortress with the Matsumae domain’s position between Hokkaido and the rest of Japan. Outside, the gate, stonework and sea views are worth examining as separate parts of the site.

Allow time for the surrounding park, especially during the spring cherry blossom season, when different varieties extend the display. Matsumae requires a road journey from Kikonai or Hakodate rather than a short station walk. The castle museum closes in winter, so check its seasonal calendar before making the trip.
