# Katsuren Castle Ruins

> Tiered limestone walls rise like a stone ship above the Katsuren Peninsula. The World Heritage ruins of Amawari’s stronghold combine a steep ascent with sweeping coastal views and a history shaped by overseas trade and rivalry with the Ryukyu court.

- Prefecture: Okinawa
- Type: Castle
- Address: Uruma, Okinawa, Japan
- Official site: https://www.katsuren-jo.jp/

Katsuren Castle occupies a limestone hill above the coast of Uruma. Its layered enclosures rise sharply from the surrounding landscape, giving the ruins a distinctive silhouette even before the climb begins. The castle is closely linked with Amawari, a fifteenth-century lord whose overseas trade brought prosperity and whose conflict with the Ryukyu throne ended in 1458.

There is no standing palace or reconstructed keep. Curving stone walls, traces of buildings and the changing height of the courtyards provide the experience instead. As you climb, look back at the route through the lower enclosures to understand how the terrain supported the defenses. The upper levels open onto broad views of the peninsula and the surrounding coast.

This is one of the castle sites in Okinawa’s Ryukyu World Heritage property. The ascent includes steep steps and exposed stone, which can be slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip and take the climb at a comfortable pace. Consult the official visitor information for admission and current access arrangements, and allow time for the approach from the bus stop as well as the ruins.
