The entrance building is a four-fifths copy of the 1908 Sapporo Station, and past it a street of wooden shops, offices and a post office runs off toward the trees. The village opened in April 1983 and now has 52 buildings, moved or reconstructed from around Hokkaido and grouped into town, fishing village, farm village and mountain village areas. Most were built between the Meiji era and the early Showa years, and many are furnished inside: a barber's shop that stood on the back approach to Hokkaido Shrine, a 1902 post office from Setana, a soldier-settler's farmhouse. From mid-April to the end of November a horse pulls a small tram car about 500 metres between the town street and the farm area, a five-minute ride for 250 yen, cash only. Each car takes only 10 people, so expect to wait at busy times. In winter a horse sleigh takes over. The museum suggests at least two hours, which is fair: the site covers 54.2 hectares including forest, and the mountain village area is a long walk from the gate. Free volunteer guided tours run from mid-April to the end of October. Bring warm boots in winter, when it also closes on Mondays.

## FAQ

### How much is admission?

Adults and university or high school students pay 1,000 yen (800 yen for groups and Hokkaido residents with ID). Junior high school students and younger, and people aged 65 and over, get in free.

### How long should I plan for a visit?

The museum recommends at least two hours. With less time you can see the building exteriors and the main spots in about an hour, and the horse-drawn tram or a free volunteer tour (mid-April to the end of October) saves some walking.

### When can I ride the horse-drawn tram?

Daily from mid-April to the end of November, except on closed days. A ride of about 500 metres takes five minutes and costs 250 yen for anyone aged 3 and over, cash only. In winter a horse sleigh runs instead.
