# Hiroshima Castle

> Hiroshima Castle’s moats, stone walls and reconstructed Ninomaru buildings trace the city’s origins as a castle town. The keep closed to visitors in March 2026, but the grounds still offer a worthwhile walk through this layered historic site.

Hiroshima Castle explains a chapter of the city’s history that predates its modern reconstruction. Mori Terumoto began building the castle in 1589, establishing a center of power on the river delta. The moats and stone walls still make that castle-town geography visible among the streets of central Hiroshima.

The original keep was destroyed by the atomic bombing in 1945. Its 1958 concrete replacement closed to visitors on March 22, 2026 because of aging and safety concerns. Plan this as a visit to the grounds and exterior, not an ascent of the tower. The reconstructed Ninomaru gate and turrets offer another way to understand the castle’s defensive architecture, with current building access detailed on the official website.

A walk beside the moat gives space to consider both the older city and the losses of the twentieth century. Combine the castle with nearby central Hiroshima sights, allowing time for the outdoor circuit. Check current notices for individual facilities; the tower closure does not mean that the whole castle grounds are closed.
