# Hirado Castle

> Hirado Castle occupies a sea-facing hill across from the old trading port. Its reconstructed keep provides a wide view of the strait, while the castle grounds connect the Matsura family’s rule with this outward-looking corner of Nagasaki.

Hirado Castle stands on a hill projecting toward the strait, across the water from the old port town. Known also as Kameoka Castle, the Edo-period complex was rebuilt by the Matsura family in the early eighteenth century. Its setting makes clear why control of the surrounding sea routes mattered to the domain.

The current main tower dates from 1962, rather than surviving intact from the age of the samurai. Exhibitions introduce the castle’s history, and the upper outlook brings the town, bridge and channels into a single panorama. The walls and approach paths deserve attention too, especially when comparing the enclosed castle grounds with the open waterfront below.

Combine the castle with time in Hirado’s historic port district, where trading history gives another perspective on the island’s past. Public transport reaches the island by road, so do not assume that a railway station is beside the castle. Allow for the final uphill approach, and consult current notices for any paths affected by stone-wall repairs before choosing a route through the grounds.
