Get off the Hakone Tozan train at Chokoku-no-Mori and the museum gate is two minutes away. Inside, the grounds fall and rise across about 70,000 square meters of lawn with roughly 120 modern and contemporary sculptures out in the open, Henry Moore's reclining figures among them, with the Hakone hills behind. It opened in 1969 as Japan's first open-air museum. The Picasso Pavilion, added in 1984, draws on a collection of 319 works, centered on 188 ceramics bought from his daughter Maya. Gabriel Loire's Symphonic Sculpture is an 18-meter tower of stained glass you can climb inside for a view over the park. Children get the Woods of Net, a crocheted play structure for elementary school age and younger. Halfway round, the Forest Footbath runs about 28 meters and uses a hot spring that rises on the site; bring a small towel. Plan on two to three hours, and expect slopes and steps between the sections. Do not touch the works or walk on fenced lawns. Photos for personal use are fine, but indoors there is no flash, video, tripod or selfie stick.
