# Fukuyama Castle

> Immediately above Fukuyama’s shinkansen station, a reconstructed keep joins surviving gates and turrets on a commanding stone platform. The museum introduces the castle’s domain history, while a circuit of the grounds reveals the difference between original structures and modern rebuilding.

Fukuyama Castle was completed in 1622 as a strategic stronghold in western Japan. Its elevated position is still striking today, especially when arriving by train: the castle stands immediately north of the station rather than requiring a journey out of town. The closeness of railway platforms and old defensive walls makes the city’s layers of history unusually visible.

The main keep is a reconstruction completed in 1966, with a museum that underwent a major renewal in 2022. Surviving structures such as the Fushimi turret and Sujigane gate provide a contrast with that modern tower. Walk the grounds before or after the exhibitions to understand which buildings preserve older fabric and which explain the castle through reconstruction.

The museum introduces the castle and successive domain lords, while the outdoor terraces give room to examine the masonry and townscape. A short approach from the station makes the site convenient, but leave enough time for a proper circuit. Check the museum calendar for exhibition changeovers and closing days rather than assuming that an accessible park means an open museum.
