# Fukuoka Castle Ruins

> Above Maizuru Park, Fukuoka Castle’s layered stone walls lead to an open platform overlooking the city. This former Kuroda stronghold offers a spacious urban ruins walk, with cherry trees and neighboring Ohori Park extending the visit beyond the defenses.

Fukuoka Castle was built for Kuroda Nagamasa and became the seat of the region’s ruling family during the Edo period. Its remains occupy Maizuru Park, where broad defensive terraces rise above a busy modern city. The layered stone walls are the clearest surviving expression of the castle’s former scale and authority.

There is no main keep to enter today. Follow the successive levels toward the open keep platform, pausing to look at how each wall screens the space behind it. From the upper area, the city views make the castle’s elevated position easy to appreciate. The walk is as much about the transitions between terraces as it is about reaching the highest viewpoint.

Cherry blossom season draws large crowds, while other times favor a slower look at the masonry. Maizuru Park adjoins Ohori Park, so the two can be linked without another transport journey. Use Ohorikoen subway station for the approach and check any temporary path restrictions before climbing. Allow time for both the level park paths and the stone steps within the castle ruins.
