Founded in 788 by the monk Saicho, Enryakuji has been the center of Tendai Buddhism and a training ground for many of Japan's most influential religious figures, including the founders of Jodo, Zen, and Nichiren sects. The temple complex is divided into three areas (Todo, Saito, and Yokawa) spread across the forested mountain and connected by walking paths. The Konpon Chudo main hall houses a flame said to have burned continuously for 1,200 years. A shuttle bus connects the three areas, but walking between them through ancient cedar forests is a meditative experience. The mountain is accessible by cable car from Sakamoto or by Eizan cable car from Kyoto, and offers wide views of Lake Biwa.
