# Echizen Ono Castle

> Above Ono’s old castle town, a reconstructed keep crowns wooded Kameyama. Stone foundations and wide basin views reward the climb, while rare morning cloud conditions create the famous distant impression of a castle floating in the sky.

Echizen Ono Castle stands on Kameyama above a compact castle town in the Fukui mountains. Its origins lie in the age of Oda Nobunaga, when the fortress and the streets below developed together. The present keep is a later reconstruction, while the hilltop setting and stone foundations explain the relationship between the castle and its surrounding basin.

The ascent is part of the visit. Paths climb through trees before opening onto the castle precinct, where the view spreads across Ono and the enclosing mountains. Spend time with the masonry and townscape rather than treating the summit simply as a photograph stop. Returning through the old town gives the panorama a useful street-level counterpart.

The famous “castle in the sky” photographs are taken from a separate hill when low cloud fills the basin; that weather-dependent viewpoint is not the castle itself. For an ordinary castle visit, plan a walk uphill from the town and check the seasonal opening calendar. Winter closure, snow and trail conditions can change what is accessible.
