The Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art occupies a former country retreat on the lower slopes of Mount Tennozan. Built for businessman Shotaro Kaga, the villa was preserved and converted into a museum rather than lost to redevelopment. Its domestic scale makes art viewing feel different from a large city gallery.

The older rooms lead into additions designed by Tadao Ando, bringing a deliberate change in light, materials and atmosphere. The collection includes works connected with the Mingei craft movement and paintings by Claude Monet, with the current exhibition determining what is on view. Outside, the garden gives the hillside setting its own rhythm through changing leaves and flowers. Leave time to experience both the architecture and the grounds.

The museum is an uphill walk from JR Yamazaki or Hankyu Oyamazaki, conveniently placed between Osaka and Kyoto. Check the exhibition calendar before traveling, as installation periods can affect opening. A limited shuttle gives priority to older visitors and others needing assistance; walking is still required beyond its stop. The terrace cafe offers a natural pause after the galleries.
