# Akashi Castle Ruins

> Two surviving three-story turrets stand above massive walls just north of Akashi Station. The castle never received a main keep, making its corner towers and broad stone terraces the focus of a visit through today’s spacious Akashi Park.

Akashi Castle was built in 1619 at a strategic point overlooking routes between the capital region and western Japan. The nearby strait gave the site a maritime role as well as a position beside major land routes. Today the castle forms the historic core of Akashi Park, immediately north of the railway station.

The Tatsumi and Hitsujisaru turrets survive as Important Cultural Properties, standing at opposite corners above a long sweep of stone walls. Although a platform for a main keep was prepared, no keep was built. This makes the relationship between the corner towers, the empty platform and the terraces particularly interesting: the defenses do not depend on a single dominant tower.

Walk up from the park to examine the masonry and look back toward the city, then leave time for the lawns and paths below. The station-side setting makes this an easy stop on a rail journey along the Seto Inland Sea. Turret interiors are not continuously open, so check the current park notices if entering a historic building is important to your visit.
