Spanning Akita and Aomori prefectures, this national park encompasses the serene Lake Towada and the volcanic Hachimantai plateau, renowned for vivid autumn foliage and alpine scenery.
- [Nyuto Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nyuto-onsen): Akita, Onsen. A secluded collection of seven rustic hot spring inns deep in the mountains near Lake Tazawa, Nyuto Onsen offers some of Japan's most atmospheric and traditional bathing experiences.
- [Senshu Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/senshu-park): Akita, Park. Senshu Park occupies the hilltop ruins of Kubota Castle, the former seat of the Satake clan who ruled Akita during the Edo period. The park is famous for its spectacular cherry blossom display in spring and peaceful lotus ponds in summer, with stone walls and moats recalling its fortress origins.
- [Namahage Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/namahage-museum): Akita, Museum. The Namahage Museum in Oga, Akita showcases the UNESCO-listed Namahage tradition, in which fearsome masked figures visit homes on New Year's Eve to ward off evil and encourage hard work. The museum displays over 150 Namahage masks from across the Oga Peninsula, each with distinct regional character. Adjacent Shinzan Shrine hosts live Namahage reenactments year-round. A good place to understand one of Japan's most dramatic folk customs.
- [Kakunodate](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kakunodate): Akita, Historic site. Known as the 'Little Kyoto of Tohoku', this beautifully preserved samurai district features centuries-old weeping cherry trees and traditional black-walled warrior residences.
- [Oga Peninsula](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/oga-peninsula): Akita, Attraction. The Oga Peninsula juts dramatically into the Sea of Japan, famous as the home of the Namahage, fearsome demon-like figures who visit houses on New Year's Eve to frighten lazy children into behaving well. The rugged coastline features dramatic cliffs, and the natural rock formation known as 'Godzilla Rock' draws photographers seeking the perfect angle.
- [Lake Tazawa](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-tazawa): Akita, Attraction. Lake Tazawa is Japan's deepest lake at 423 meters, its waters maintaining a deep cobalt-blue color year-round thanks to its depth. Surrounded by forested mountains, the lake is associated with the legend of the beautiful maiden Tatsuko who was transformed into a dragon, her bronze statue standing at the water's edge.
- [Michi-no-Eki Akita Port](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-akita-port): Akita, Michi no eki. Port Tower Selion, 143 metres of glass at Tsuchizaki harbour, doubles as a roadside station. Ride up to the free deck at 100 metres, then shop for kiritanpo and iburigakko on the ground floor before heading for the Oga Peninsula.
- [Tamagawa Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tamagawa-onsen): Akita, Onsen. A hot-spring cure town 43 km up a mountain road from Tazawako Station, built around the Obuki source: 98°C water at pH 1.2, about 9,000 liters a minute from a single vent. People lie on the steaming ground along the trail for bedrock bathing. The inn is open from late April to late November (check the closing date with the inn), and the road beyond the dam shuts to cars for the winter.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kisakata Nemu-no-Oka](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kisakata-nemu-no-oka): Akita, Michi no eki. A roadside station on Route 7 right on the Sea of Japan in Kisakata. A fourth-floor hot-spring bath faces the water, a free sixth-floor tower looks back at Mount Chokai, and in July the restaurant serves local rock oysters.
- [Oyu Stone Circles](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/oyu-stone-circles): Akita, Historic site. Two rings of river stones built between about 2000 and 1500 BCE on a terrace above the Oyu River in Kazuno, Akita, and one of the 17 parts of the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan World Heritage property. The larger ring, Manza, is up to 52 m across. The circles are open from mid-April to mid-November (11 April to 23 November in 2026), and the free guided walks need no booking. Getting here without a car takes planning.
- [Michi-no-Eki Oga](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-oga): Akita, Michi no eki. Known as Ogare, this harborside station opened in 2018 a few minutes' walk from JR Oga Station. The fish counter changes with each day's landing, which makes it a good first stop before a drive around the Oga Peninsula and its namahage sites.
