- [Kirishima Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kirishima-onsen): Kagoshima, Onsen. Cluster of mountain hot spring resorts in the volcanic Kirishima highlands, offering diverse mineral waters and dramatic natural settings.
- [Kagoshima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kagoshima): Kagoshima, City. A subtropical southern city facing the active Sakurajima volcano across the bay, with a samurai history and a distinct local cuisine. Ash falls often enough that the city issues bags for it.
- [Sengan-en Garden](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sengan-en-garden): Kagoshima, Garden. Edo-period garden and villa of the Shimazu clan, using Sakurajima volcano and Kinko Bay as borrowed scenery.
- [Ibusuki Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ibusuki-onsen): Kagoshima, Onsen. A unique hot spring resort where visitors are buried in naturally heated volcanic sand on the beach for a one-of-a-kind onsen experience. The geothermally warmed sand reaches temperatures of around 50-55 degrees Celsius.
- [Chiran Samurai District](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chiran-samurai-district): Kagoshima, Historic site. A beautifully preserved Edo-period samurai district featuring seven exquisite gardens and a 700-meter stone-walled street.
- [Cape Sata](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/cape-sata): Kagoshima, Landmark. The southernmost point of mainland Japan, at the tip of the Osumi Peninsula. From the car park an 800-meter trail through cycads and banyans passes Misaki Shrine and ends at an observation deck facing Sata Misaki Lighthouse, first lit in 1871. Free, open from 8:00 until sunset, and realistically reached only by car.
- [Tokara Islands](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokara-islands): Kagoshima, Island. A chain of islands between Yakushima and Amami-Oshima that make up Toshima village, with people living on seven of them. No airport reaches them: the village ferry leaves Kagoshima at 23:00 about twice a week, and there are no restaurants, taxis or banks on the islands, so you book a minshuku with meals before you board.
- [Koshikijima Islands](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/koshikijima-islands): Kagoshima, Island. Three inhabited islands about 45 km off western Kagoshima, joined end to end since 2020 by the prefecture's longest bridge but still reached only by boat, two sailings a day from each of two mainland ports. Sea cliffs, a 4 km beach bar that walls three lakes off from the sea, and Toshidon, a UNESCO-listed New Year's Eve rite held inside private homes.
- [Mount Karakuni](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-karakuni): Kagoshima, Mountain. The highest peak of the Kirishima range at 1,700 meters, with a summit crater about 900 meters across and 300 meters deep. The usual climb starts at Ebino Kogen on the Miyazaki side. Neighbouring Shinmoedake has been at volcanic alert level 2 since October 2025, so some nearby trails stay closed.
