Osorezan (Mount Osore) in Mutsu, Aomori is one of Japan's three most sacred places alongside Mount Koya and Mount Hiei. The barren volcanic landscape of sulfurous vents, a crater lake, and colorful mineral deposits creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Bodaiji Temple on site hosts the famous Itako mediums festival in July. Open May to October only.
- [Lake Towada](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-towada): Aomori, Attraction. A pristine caldera lake straddling Aomori and Akita prefectures, renowned for its deep blue waters, vivid autumn foliage, and the Maiden of the Lake statue.

This curious site in Shingo Village preserves a local legend that Jesus Christ survived the crucifixion and lived out his days as a rice farmer in rural Tohoku. - [Mount Iwaki](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-iwaki): Aomori, Mountain. A lone 1,625-meter volcano west of Hirosaki that people in Tsugaru call Tsugaru Fuji. A toll road with 69 bends climbs to the 8th station, a lift continues to the 9th, and the summit is about 30 to 40 minutes on foot from there; hikers can also start at Iwakiyama Shrine and walk the whole way.
- [Michi-no-Eki Asamushi Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-asamushi-onsen): Aomori, Michi no eki. The roadside station at Asamushi Onsen puts its public bath on the top floor, with glass looking out over Mutsu Bay and Yunoshima island. Downstairs you can buy scallops, apple products and the town's kujira-mochi.
- [Aoni Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/aoni-onsen): Aomori, Onsen. A single inn deep in the Aoni valley east of Kuroishi, lit at night by oil lamps instead of electric light, with four baths and no mobile signal. From December to March private cars are banned on the access road and the inn's booked shuttle is the only way in.
- [Sukayu Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sukayu-onsen): Aomori, Onsen. A single mountain inn at about 890 m in the Hakkoda range, known for the Hiba Sennin-buro, a pillarless mixed bath of hiba wood about 160 tatami mats in size, filled with strongly acidic sulfur water. The weather station here measured 566 cm of snow on February 26, 2013, the deepest since JMA's automated stations began keeping statistics in 1979.

It was an inn called Shayokan from 1950, became a museum in 1998 and has been a national Important Cultural Property since 2004. Adult admission is 600 yen.
- [Michi-no-Eki Inakadate](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-inakadate): Aomori, Michi no eki. A Route 102 bypass stop in the village that started Japan's rice paddy art. From the viewing tower you look down on the second art field in summer; the rest of the year it is a farm shop and a bowl of ancient-rice ramen.
- [Hotokegaura](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hotokegaura): Aomori, Landmark. About two kilometres of white and pale green tuff spires on the far west coast of the Shimokita Peninsula. You get there on a small boat from Sai, or down a long flight of steps from a roadside car park, and neither is quick.
