- [Hara Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hara-castle-ruins): Nagasaki, Historic site. Grassy ruins on a headland above the Ariake Sea, where some 27,000 to 37,000 rebels under Amakusa Shiro held out for months in 1637 to 1638 and almost all were killed. A UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites component since 2018.
- [Odaigahara](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/odaigahara): Nara, Mountain. A high plateau on the Nara and Mie border with some of the heaviest rainfall in Japan, a 1,695-meter top at Mount Hidegatake and the Daijagura rock jutting out over a sheer drop. One reservation-only bus a day from the Kashihara area runs from late April to late November, and the only road is closed all winter.
- [Tanize Suspension Bridge](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tanize-suspension-bridge): Nara, Landmark. A steel-wire footbridge about 297 meters long and 54 meters above the Totsukawa River, built in 1954 with money the villagers put up themselves. It still links two hamlets, it moves under your feet, and the only public transport is a long-distance bus that stops a few times a day.
- [Zakimi Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/zakimi-castle-ruins): Okinawa, Castle. Above Yomitan, Zakimi’s graceful stone walls and arched gateways reveal the skill of Ryukyuan castle builders. This compact World Heritage ruin rewards close attention to its defensive curves, with the nearby Yuntanza Museum adding local historical context.
- [Nageiredo (Mitokusan Sanbutsuji)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nageiredo-mitokusan-sanbutsuji): Tottori, Temple. The inner hall of Sanbutsuji temple, built on stilts inside a cliff hollow on Mount Mitoku and the only National Treasure building in Tottori. Seeing it up close means a steep pilgrim climb that the temple will not let you do alone.
- [Nakagusuku Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nakagusuku-castle-ruins): Okinawa, Castle. Six stone-walled enclosures trace a ridge above central Okinawa at Nakagusuku. This World Heritage castle ruin is especially rewarding for its varied masonry, allowing visitors to follow the changing craft of Ryukyuan fortification across the site.
- [Oyu Stone Circles](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/oyu-stone-circles): Akita, Historic site. Two rings of river stones built between about 2000 and 1500 BCE on a terrace above the Oyu River in Kazuno, Akita, and one of the 17 parts of the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan World Heritage property. The larger ring, Manza, is up to 52 m across. The circles are open from mid-April to mid-November (11 April to 23 November in 2026), and the free guided walks need no booking. Getting here without a car takes planning.
- [Kasuga Village and Mount Yasumandake](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kasuga-village-and-mount-yasumandake): Nagasaki, Historic site. A farming village of terraced rice fields on the west coast of Hirado Island, where Hidden Christians kept their faith by praying to Mount Yasumandake and to an offshore islet of martyrs, and never rejoined the Catholic Church. Part of the UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites. There is no church: come for the terraces, the small information house run by villagers and the climb to the shrine on Yasumandake. A car makes it much easier.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kaju Koen Ashigakubo](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kaju-koen-ashigakubo): Saitama, Michi no eki. A Route 299 stop right beside Ashigakubo Station on the Seibu Chichibu Line, so you can reach it without a car. In January and February its car park serves the Ashigakubo icicles, a 200-meter wall of ice.
