- [Nageiredo (Mitokusan Sanbutsuji)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nageiredo-mitokusan-sanbutsuji): Tottori, Temple. The inner hall of Sanbutsuji temple, built on stilts inside a cliff hollow on Mount Mitoku and the only National Treasure building in Tottori. Seeing it up close means a steep pilgrim climb that the temple will not let you do alone.
- [Ofuna Kannon](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ofuna-kannon): Kanagawa, Temple. A white concrete bust of Kannon about 25 meters tall on the hill above Ofuna Station, begun in 1929, abandoned for 23 years and finished in 1960. It is now a Soto Zen temple and a branch of Soji-ji; entry is 300 yen.
- [Arimafuji Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/arimafuji-park): Hyogo, Park. Woodland, pondside paths and imaginative play areas spread beneath the distinctive hill of Arimafuji in Sanda. This large prefectural park offers a family nature outing beyond Takarazuka, with different zones that deserve a route plan of their own.
- [Beppu Rakutenchi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/beppu-rakutenchi): Oita, Amusement park. A small, old-fashioned amusement park on the slope above Beppu, opened in 1929. You ride a steep cable car up, bet on the daily duck race, and the hot spring bath is included in admission.
- [Hakodate Orthodox Church](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hakodate-orthodox-church): Hokkaido, Historic site. A white-walled, green-roofed Russian Byzantine church on the site of the Russian consulate chapel built in 1860, the starting point of Orthodox Christianity in Japan. The current building dates from 1916 and is an Important Cultural Property.
- [Iwakuni Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/iwakuni-castle): Yamaguchi, Castle. A reconstructed hilltop castle above Kintaikyo Bridge, with views over the Nishiki River and Iwakuni.
- [Kakegawa Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kakegawa-castle): Shizuoka, Castle. A timber-reconstructed keep and surviving Edo-period palace make Kakegawa a rewarding contrast to concrete castle replicas. The compact hilltop site sits above a former Tokaido post town, with a tea house adding a distinctly Shizuoka pause.
- [Kamuiwakka Hot Falls](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kamuiwakka-hot-falls): Hokkaido, Onsen. A river in Shiretoko National Park that runs warm because hot spring water from Mount Io feeds it. You wade about 400 m upstream, over small waterfalls, to a pool at the fourth fall where the water reaches about 35 to 38C. Entry is booked and paid, July to September only, at the end of about 10 km of gravel road that is open roughly June to the start of October.
- [Kimpu Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kimpu-shrine): Nara, Shrine. A small, old shrine in the cedar woods of Okusenbon, the highest part of Mount Yoshino, to the god of the gold-bearing mountains. Just below the hall stands the Yoshitsune Kakure-to, a small tower where Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have hidden. The shrine is one of the Yoshino and Omine sites of the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage listing. Free, always open, and about five steep minutes from the last bus stop.
- [Michi-no-Eki Hagi Sea Mart](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-hagi-sea-mart): Yamaguchi, Michi no eki. A roadside station built as a public market beside Hagi's fishing port and fish auction. Fishmongers sell the day's catch face to face, and the restaurants inside turn it into seafood bowls. Go before lunch for the best choice.
- [Michi-no-Eki Nakasatsunai](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-nakasatsunai): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A spread-out station on Route 236 in a farming village south of Obihiro, with a free bean museum, a pioneer farmhouse and a cluster of small cafes and takeout shops built around local edamame, chicken and eggs.
- [Mount Haku](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-haku): Ishikawa, Mountain. A 2,702-meter volcano on the border of Ishikawa and Gifu, counted with Fuji and Tateyama as one of Japan's three holy mountains. Most climbers start at Bettodeai, walk about four hours to the Murodo hut and reach the summit in another 40 minutes. On busy summer days private cars must stop at Ichinose and climbers ride a shuttle bus to the trailhead.
- [Odaigahara](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/odaigahara): Nara, Mountain. A high plateau on the Nara and Mie border with some of the heaviest rainfall in Japan, a 1,695-meter top at Mount Hidegatake and the Daijagura rock jutting out over a sheer drop. One reservation-only bus a day from the Kashihara area runs from late April to late November, and the only road is closed all winter.
- [Shikinaen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shikinaen): Okinawa, Garden. A royal villa and strolling garden on a hill in Naha, laid out in 1799 and used to host envoys of the Chinese emperor. Japanese garden planning, a Chinese-style pavilion and stone bridges, and red-tiled Ryukyu roofs all sit round one pond. Destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt by 1996, it is one of the nine parts of the Gusuku Sites World Heritage property. Closed on Wednesdays.
- [Kakeroma Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kakeroma-island): Kagoshima, Island. A long, ragged island across the Oshima Strait from the south tip of Amami Oshima, with small settlements tucked into its bays. The only way over is Setouchi town's ferry from Koniya or a water taxi, and on the island there are no taxis, no convenience stores and almost nowhere to eat dinner.
