- [Michi-no-Eki Yonezawa](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-yonezawa): Yamagata, Michi no eki. A large station opened in 2018 about 200 meters from Yonezawa-Chuo IC on the Tohoku-Chuo Expressway. Come for Yonezawa beef, Yonezawa ramen and Okitama produce, then head into the old castle town.
- [Mount Tarumae](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-tarumae): Hokkaido, Mountain. An active volcano south of Lake Shikotsu whose 1909 lava dome sits in the summit crater like a giant pudding. From the 7th-station car park it is about 50 minutes up to Higashiyama (1,022 m) on the crater rim, one of the easiest volcano walks in Hokkaido, though the crater floor itself is closed.
- [Mount Yake](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-yake): Nagano, Mountain. The active volcano on the Nagano and Gifu border above Kamikochi, climbed as a day hike to its 2,444 m north peak, where fumaroles steam beside the trail. Check the Japan Meteorological Agency's alert level before you go; the higher south peak is closed.
- [Okinoerabujima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okinoerabujima): Kagoshima, Island. A raised coral island of about 94 square kilometres between Tokunoshima and Yoron, shared by the towns of Wadomari and China. The limestone under its sugar cane and lily fields is full of caves: Shoryudo is the show cave, and guided caving tours go into wild ones.
- [Tottori Sand Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tottori-sand-museum): Tottori, Museum. Large sand sculptures in an indoor gallery beside the Tottori dunes, with exhibitions rebuilt around changing themes.
- [Yamanaka Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yamanaka-onsen): Ishikawa, Onsen. One of the Kaga onsen towns, in the valley of the Daishoji River. The public bath, Kikunoyu, costs 500 yen and is split into two separate buildings, one for men and one for women. Below the town, a 1.3 km riverside path through Kakusenkei gorge runs between a cypress bridge and a magenta S-shaped one.
- [Yoshimizu Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yoshimizu-shrine): Nara, Shrine. A small shrine on Mount Yoshino that was Yoshimizu-in, a monks' lodging of Kimpusen-ji, until the early Meiji period. Its shoin, which the shrine calls the oldest in Japan, has the room where Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have hidden in 1185 and the seat of Emperor Go-Daigo, who made it his palace in 1336. The courtyard looks out on the Hitome Senbon cherry view. Entry to the shoin is 600 yen.
- [Asuka-dera](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/asuka-dera): Nara, Temple. A small hall in the fields of Asuka on the site of the temple Soga no Umako began in 588. Inside sits the bronze Asuka Daibutsu, about 2.75 m tall, which the temple dates to 609 and calls Japan's oldest Buddha statue. It was badly damaged in a fire in 1196 and is patched, but you can stand a few metres away and photograph it, which almost no other old temple allows. Entry is 500 yen.
- [Chugu-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chugu-ji): Nara, Temple. A small nunnery right next to the Yumedono in Horyu-ji's east precinct. It is kept for its main image, a seventh-century camphor-wood bodhisattva sitting with one leg crossed over the other and a fingertip at its cheek. Entry is 600 yen and half an hour is plenty, but do not rush the statue.
- [Gojo Shinmachi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/gojo-shinmachi): Nara, Neighborhood. About 750 m of white-plastered merchant houses along the old Kishu Kaido on the north bank of the Yoshino River in Gojo. The Kuriyama house here, dated 1607, is said to be the oldest house in Japan with a known building year; it is a private home, seen from the street. Two small heritage houses are free to enter. Quiet, with few shops and little English; about 10 minutes on foot from JR Gojo Station.
- [Ikeda Castle Ruins Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ikeda-castle-ruins-park): Osaka, Castle. A landscaped hilltop park marks the former stronghold of the Ikeda clan, with a Japanese garden and views across the city. Its castle-style observation building is modern, making this a relaxed introduction to local history rather than an intact medieval castle.
- [Kiyosu Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kiyosu-castle): Aichi, Castle. Oda Nobunaga ran his campaigns from Kiyosu from 1555, and after his death the Kiyosu Conference chose his successor here. Today's four-storey keep with golden shachi fish on the roof went up in 1989; entry is 400 yen.
- [Kumejima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kumejima): Okinawa, Island. An island of about 7,000 people roughly 100 km west of Okinawa Island, reached by a 30-minute flight from Naha or a three-hour ferry. The draw is Hate-no-hama, a sandbar about 7 km long that you can only reach on a tour boat, plus the turtle-shell rocks of Tatami-ishi and an 18th-century stone-walled house.
- [Lagunasia](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lagunasia): Aichi, Amusement park. The ride park inside the Laguna Ten Bosch resort on Mikawa Bay. Mid-sized and family friendly, with a wet pirate coaster, summer day and night pools, and a big winter illumination with projection mapping.
- [Manda Pit](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/manda-pit): Kumamoto, Historic site. A pit of the Mitsui Miike coal mine with its works still standing: an 18.8 m steel headframe from 1908, a brick winding house, and the bathhouse where miners washed off the coal dust. Coal came up here from 1902 to 1951. It belongs to the Miike Coal Mine and Miike Port part of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution, with the Miyanohara Pit and Miike Port just across the border in Omuta. Entry is 410 yen.
