- [Michi-no-Eki Yuhi Park Hamada](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-yuhi-park-hamada): Shimane, Michi no eki. A hilltop station on the Route 9 Hamada Bypass that looks over Hamada's fishing port to the Sea of Japan. Stay for the sunset, eat fish landed below, and pick up dried nodoguro or horse mackerel to take home.
- [Michi-no-Eki Yuiyui Kunigami](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-yuiyui-kunigami): Okinawa, Michi no eki. The only roadside station in Kunigami, the northernmost village on Okinawa Island, on Route 58 near Okuma Beach. Stock up on local produce, eat Okinawan home cooking and check the road news before driving on to Cape Hedo.
- [Nesta Resort Kobe](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nesta-resort-kobe): Hyogo, Theme park. A hillside resort where the attractions are things you do yourself: ziplines, a giant rolling ball, off-road buggies and Nerf battles, plus a summer pool and glamping. Better for active teens and adults than toddlers.
- [Ryusendo Cave](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ryusendo-cave): Iwate, Attraction. A limestone cave in Iwaizumi with about 700 meters open to visitors and three lit underground lakes, the deepest of them 98 meters, in water so clear it glows blue.
- [Tobu Zoo](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tobu-zoo): Saitama, Amusement park. A zoo and amusement park rolled into one, about an hour from Tokyo on the Tobu line: around 120 animal species including white tigers, plus the Regina II wooden coaster over the lake and a big summer pool.
- [Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Monument](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/twenty-six-martyrs-museum-and-monument): Nagasaki, Museum. The execution ground of the 26 Martyrs of 1597, now a park with a long bronze memorial, a small museum and a church whose mosaic twin towers borrow from Gaudí. It is a short, steep walk from Nagasaki Station.
- [Uda Matsuyama](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/uda-matsuyama): Nara, Neighborhood. A former castle town in the Ouda part of Uda City that turned into a merchant town for medicines, Uda paper and Yoshino kuzu starch. About 600 metres of townhouses from the Edo period to the early Showa era survive in a protected district. Morino Kyuyakuen, a herb garden on the hill behind a kuzu maker's house, has been growing medicinal plants since 1729. It is quiet, a bus ride from the nearest station, and done in half a day.
- [Chiune Sugihara Memorial Hall](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chiune-sugihara-memorial-hall): Gifu, Museum. A small cypress-built museum in the Hill of Humanity park in Yaotsu about Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese consul in Kaunas who wrote visas for Jewish refugees in the summer of 1940. Adults pay 500 yen; getting there without a car takes planning.
- [Ehime Children's Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ehime-children-s-castle): Ehime, Park. A prefectural children's park on about 35 hectares of wooded hill south of Matsuyama. Entry is free; the ladybug monorail, bobsleigh, boats and buggies cost a few hundred yen each. Easy to pair with Tobe Zoo next door.
- [Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/higashiyama-zoo-and-botanical-gardens): Aichi, Zoo. Nagoya's big zoo and botanical garden on a hill in Chikusa Ward: Shabani the western lowland gorilla, koalas, and a 1936 steel-framed glasshouse that is an Important Cultural Property. Adults pay 800 yen; junior high school students and younger are free.
- [Ikeda Castle Ruins Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ikeda-castle-ruins-park): Osaka, Castle. A landscaped hilltop park marks the former stronghold of the Ikeda clan, with a Japanese garden and views across the city. Its castle-style observation building is modern, making this a relaxed introduction to local history rather than an intact medieval castle.
- [Ikegami Honmon-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ikegami-honmon-ji): Tokyo, Temple. Head temple of the Nichiren school on a hill in Ota Ward, built where Nichiren died in 1282. Free to visit, with the oldest surviving five-storied pagoda in the Kanto region and a steep flight of 96 stone steps at the front.
- [Kitora Tomb](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kitora-tomb): Nara, Historic site. A two-tier round tomb from the late 7th or early 8th century whose chamber was painted with the four guardian animals of the directions, animal-headed zodiac figures and a star chart. The murals were removed to save them, and the free Kitora Tomb Mural Experience Hall, Shijin no Yakata, shows a full-size chamber replica and puts the real paintings on view during limited periods each year. One of the 19 parts of the Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara World Heritage property, 12 minutes on foot from Tsubosakayama Station.
- [Kiyoshikojin Seicho-ji Temple](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kiyoshikojin-seicho-ji-temple): Hyogo, Temple. A climbing shopping street leads to Kiyoshikojin, where Buddhist worship meets devotion to the guardian of fire and the household hearth. The approach and wooded temple grounds make a rewarding walk from the Hankyu Takarazuka line.
- [Kiyosumi Gardens](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kiyosumi-gardens): Tokyo, Garden. A Meiji-era stroll garden built by the Iwasaki family of Mitsubishi around a large pond with three islands, edged with stones their steamships brought from all over Japan. A line of stepping stones lets you walk along the water's edge, and entry is 150 yen.
