The 2,486-meter sacred mountain of Futarasan Shrine, climbed only from the shrine's Chugushi on Lake Chuzenji between 25 April and 11 November. The fee is 1,000 yen in cash, and the round trip takes six to seven hours with no water or toilets on the way.
- [Mount Tanigawa](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-tanigawa): Gunma, Mountain. A 1,977-meter peak on the Gunma and Niigata border where more than 800 climbers have died since 1931, most of them on the east-face rock walls. Ordinary hikers ride the ropeway to Tenjindaira and take the Tenjin Ridge: about three hours up and two down.
- [Tokyo Dome City](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokyo-dome-city): Tokyo, Amusement park. The leisure district around Tokyo Dome, with about 20 pay-per-ride attractions including the Thunder Dolphin coaster, plus the Spa LaQua hot-spring complex. There is no entrance fee: rides cost 600 to 1,800 yen each, or an adult one-day passport is 4,900 to 5,800 yen depending on the date.
- [Toyota Automobile Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/toyota-automobile-museum): Aichi, Museum. Toyota's car museum in Nagakute traces motoring from the first petrol cars of the late 19th century to today with about 140 vehicles from Japan, Europe and the US, most kept in running order. Adults pay 1,200 yen.
- [Yuzuki Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yuzuki-castle-ruins): Ehime, Castle. Inside Dogo Park, Yuzuki preserves the moats and earthworks of the Kono family’s medieval stronghold. Reconstructed residences and archaeological displays reveal castle life before Matsuyama’s later hilltop keep, a short walk from the hot-spring district.
- [Hamamatsu Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hamamatsu-castle): Shizuoka, Castle. Tokugawa Ieyasu’s early career gives Hamamatsu Castle its historical focus. A reconstructed keep rises above old stone foundations in a green city park, offering a compact introduction to the ruler’s years before the establishment of the shogunate.
- [Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hirauchi-kaichu-onsen): Kagoshima, Onsen. Two rock pools on the shore at Hirauchi, on Yakushima's south coast, where hot spring water rises among the boulders and the sea covers everything except around low tide. Bathing is mixed, swimsuits and underwear are not allowed, and you pay by putting 300 yen in the donation box.
- [Hosen-in](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hosen-in): Kyoto, Temple. A small Tendai temple at the far end of Ohara's approach lane, beyond Sanzen-in, where the 1,000-yen entry includes matcha and a sweet served facing a garden framed by the hall's pillars. A 700-year-old pine fills the view, and the corridor ceiling is made of blood-stained floorboards from Fushimi Castle.
- [Jison-in](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jison-in): Wakayama, Temple. A small Shingon temple by the Kinokawa river where, by tradition, Kukai's mother lived out her life because women were barred from Koyasan. Women still leave breast-shaped ema here. The 180th stone of the Koyasan Choishi-michi stands on the steps up to Niu Kanshofu Shrine just above it, and the temple is one of the component parts of the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage property. Free; 20 minutes on foot from Kudoyama Station.
- [Kozu-shima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kozu-shima): Tokyo, Island. An Izu island reached by jet ferry from Takeshiba in about 3 hours 45 minutes or by a 45-minute flight from Chofu. Mount Tenjo, 572 m, is a hike of four to five hours, and in December 2020 the island became Tokyo's first Dark Sky Island.
- [Kyoto Botanical Garden](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyoto-botanical-garden): Kyoto, Garden. Opened in 1924 and billed as Japan's oldest public botanical garden: 24 hectares by the Kamo River, about 500 cherry trees and a large glass conservatory, all for 500 yen. Exit 3 of Kitayama subway station opens onto the north gate.
- [Lake Ikeda](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-ikeda): Kagoshima, Attraction. A round caldera lake about 15 km around and 233 meters deep, the largest lake in Kyushu, with Mount Kaimon across the water. Giant eels up to 2 meters long live in it, and the shore has flower beds, a lakeside cafe and free parking, but buses are few.
- [Matsuo-dera](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/matsuo-dera): Nara, Temple. A Shingon temple on Mount Matsuo at the south end of the Yata hills, which by its own account was founded in 718 and is Japan's oldest temple for warding off bad luck. Okadera in Asuka makes a similar claim to be the first. The 1337 main hall is an Important Cultural Property, the grounds are free, and in May the flower field becomes a free rose garden. The catch is the 2.4 km uphill walk from the bus stop.
- [Michi-no-Eki Aogaki](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-aogaki): Hyogo, Michi no eki. Aogaki combines Tamba farm shopping with a meal stop near Aogaki IC and the Tamba Cloth Heritage Hall. Renovation is scheduled from July 2026 to July 2027; the operator says food and product sales continue during the works.
- [Michi-no-Eki Boyo Nakayama](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-boyo-nakayama): Hokkaido, Michi no eki.
