- [Yata-dera](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yata-dera): Nara, Temple. Properly Kongosen-ji, a temple halfway up Yatasan in the Yata hills west of Yamato-Koriyama, known locally as Yata no Jizo-san. In June it is the hydrangea temple: about 10,000 plants of some 60 kinds flower on the slope and a 700 yen fee applies. The rest of the year it is free and quiet, but direct buses run only four or five times a day.
- [Yoshiminedera Temple](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yoshiminedera-temple): Kyoto, Temple. Yoshiminedera spreads across Kyoto’s western hills, with terraced temple paths, wide city views and the remarkable spreading Yuryu pine. Seasonal flowers reward the climb, but reaching this mountain temple now requires more planning than older bus guides suggest.
- [Yoshimizu Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yoshimizu-shrine): Nara, Shrine. A small shrine on Mount Yoshino that was Yoshimizu-in, a monks' lodging of Kimpusen-ji, until the early Meiji period. Its shoin, which the shrine calls the oldest in Japan, has the room where Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have hidden in 1185 and the seat of Emperor Go-Daigo, who made it his palace in 1336. The courtyard looks out on the Hitome Senbon cherry view. Entry to the shoin is 600 yen.
- [Doai Station](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/doai-station): Gunma, Landmark. An unstaffed JR Joetsu Line station whose down-line platform sits inside the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, about 70 meters below the station building. Getting out means climbing 462 steps, then another 24, which takes about 10 minutes. Only five trains stop each way per day, so plan around the timetable.
- [Goshono Site](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/goshono-site): Iwate, Historic site. The site of a Jomon village on a plateau above the Mabechi River in Ichinohe, northern Iwate, lived in from about 5,000 to 4,200 years ago and one of the 17 parts of the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan World Heritage property. You cross a covered wooden suspension bridge to reach it. Some pit houses have been rebuilt with earth roofs, based on burnt remains found here. The park is free; the museum costs 300 yen.
- [Hachioji Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hachioji-castle-ruins): Tokyo, Historic site. The ruins of Hojo Ujiteru's mountain castle, stormed by the armies of Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu on June 23, 1590, a defeat that settled the surrender of Odawara Castle. Restored stone walls at the lord's residence site are a short walk from the free guidance center; the summit keep site is a mountain hike higher up.
- [Hakone Yumoto Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hakone-yumoto-onsen): Kanagawa, Onsen. Hakone Yumoto is the end of the line for the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku, about 80 minutes out, and the oldest of Hakone's hot spring areas. Most visitors change trains here and head up the mountain. It is worth stopping instead for an afternoon at Tenzan Tohji-kyo or Hakone Yuryo, two large day bathhouses a short bus ride from the station.
- [Hama-rikyu Gardens](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hama-rikyu-gardens): Tokyo, Garden. A former shogunal villa on Tokyo Bay whose main pond still fills and drains with the tide, the only Edo-period tidal pond left in Tokyo. Admission is 300 yen, and the gates close at 17:00.
- [Himeyuri Peace Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/himeyuri-peace-museum): Okinawa, Museum. A museum beside the Himeyuri Monument in Itoman, founded in 1989 by the alumni association of the two girls' schools whose students were sent to nurse in an army hospital during the Battle of Okinawa. Testimony videos, photographs and a full-size model of a cave tell what happened to them. Adults pay 450 yen.
- [Hotakadake](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hotakadake): Nagano, Mountain. A horseshoe of rock peaks around the Karasawa cirque, topped by Okuhotaka at 3,190 m, the highest point in Nagano and Gifu and the third-highest mountain in Japan. The hut below the summit puts the walk from Kamikochi at about nine hours, so almost everyone spends a night on the way.
- [Hozan-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hozan-ji): Nara, Temple. A working temple of prayer halfway up Mount Ikoma, where people come to ask Kangiten, known locally as Shoten-san, for luck in business. Its halls sit right under the Hannya-kutsu, a sheer rock face where En no Gyoja is said to have trained. Ride the Ikoma Cable Car, opened in 1918, to Hozanji Station, then walk about 10 minutes up the stepped approach. Entry is free.
- [Jiko-in](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jiko-in): Nara, Temple. A small Zen temple in Yamato-Koriyama built in 1663 by the tea master and local lord Katagiri Sekishu, laid out as one long tea gathering from the gate to the tea rooms. The 1,000 yen entry includes a bowl of matcha in the thatched shoin, looking over a clipped garden toward the Yamato basin. The view now takes in a fair amount of suburb, and it is cash only.
- [Jozankei Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jozankei-onsen): Hokkaido, Onsen. Jozankei is inside Sapporo's city limits, in the mountains of Minami-ku, about an hour from Sapporo Station on a Jotetsu bus. Kappa statues stand all over town, the footbath in Jozan Gensen Park is free, and the red Futami suspension bridge is where to stand when the gorge turns red and yellow in early to mid October.
- [Kawasaki Daishi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kawasaki-daishi): Kanagawa, Temple. Heiken-ji, founded in 1128 and known as Kawasaki Daishi, is a head temple of Chisan Shingon Buddhism where people come to ward off bad luck. Entry to the grounds is free, and it is an 8-minute walk from Kawasaki-Daishi Station on the Keikyu Daishi Line.
- [MOMAT (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/momat-national-museum-of-modern-art-tokyo): Tokyo, Museum. Japan's first national art museum, opened in 1952 and in Kitanomaru Park since 1969. The MOMAT Collection shows about 200 of its more than 14,000 works at a time, from Meiji-era painting to photography and video; special exhibitions cost extra.
