- [Rinno-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/rinno-ji): Tochigi, Temple. The Tendai temple that has run Nikko's mountain worship since the monk Shodo opened it in 766. Two sites ten minutes apart: Sanbutsudo, the main hall with three gilded Buddhas about 7.5 metres from pedestal to the top of the halo, and Taiyuin, the mausoleum of the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, uphill next to Futarasan Shrine. Separate tickets from Tosho-gu. One of the four parts of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko World Heritage property.
- [Ryujin Suspension Bridge](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ryujin-suspension-bridge): Ibaraki, Landmark. A pedestrian suspension bridge with a 375-meter main span, hung 100 meters above the lake behind Ryujin Dam in northern Ibaraki. People bungee jump from the middle of it, and around Golden Week about 1,000 carp streamers fly over the gorge. There is no train: the bus from Hitachi-Ota Station runs three times on weekdays and five times on weekends and holidays, and the bus must be booked in advance.
- [Tokyo Big Sight](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokyo-big-sight): Tokyo, Landmark. The inverted pyramids on Tokyo Bay. Japan's biggest exhibition venue, and the home of Comiket.
- [Aoshima Cat Island (Ehime)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/aoshima-cat-island-ehime): Ehime, Island. A tiny fishing island 13.5 km off Nagahama where cats far outnumber the few elderly people who still live there. There are no shops, restaurants, vending machines or places to stay, the boat runs twice a day and takes at most 34 passengers a day, and visitors are asked to follow a short set of rules.
- [Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chiran-peace-museum-for-kamikaze-pilots): Kagoshima, Museum. A museum on the site of the wartime Chiran airfield that displays the portraits, letters and wills of the 1,036 army airmen who died in the 1945 special attack operations around Okinawa. Admission is 500 yen, and it is open every day.
- [Hachioji Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hachioji-castle-ruins): Tokyo, Historic site. The ruins of Hojo Ujiteru's mountain castle, stormed by the armies of Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu on June 23, 1590, a defeat that settled the surrender of Odawara Castle. Restored stone walls at the lord's residence site are a short walk from the free guidance center; the summit keep site is a mountain hike higher up.
- [Hamamatsu Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hamamatsu-castle): Shizuoka, Castle. Tokugawa Ieyasu’s early career gives Hamamatsu Castle its historical focus. A reconstructed keep rises above old stone foundations in a green city park, offering a compact introduction to the ruler’s years before the establishment of the shogunate.
- [Japan Monkey Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/japan-monkey-park): Aichi, Amusement park. An old-school amusement park on a wooded hill east of Inuyama, with a coaster that runs through the trees, a log-flume drop, a big Ferris wheel and a summer pool. Easy to pair with Inuyama Castle on a day from Nagoya.
- [Kashiragashima Church](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kashiragashima-church): Nagasaki, Historic site. A sandstone church on Kashiragashima, off Nakadori island in the Goto chain, built from 1910 to 1919 by Tetsukawa Yosuke with stone the congregation cut and carried themselves. Part of the UNESCO Hidden Christian Sites, and awkward to reach without a car.
- [Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kitaguchi-hongu-fuji-sengen-jinja): Yamanashi, Shrine. The shrine at the foot of the Yoshida Trail, where Edo-period pilgrims purified themselves before climbing Mount Fuji. A long gravel approach runs between stone lanterns and huge cedars to a red torii about 18 metres high, which the shrine says is the largest wooden torii in Japan. It is part of the Fujisan World Heritage property, free to enter, and a 20-minute walk from Fujisan Station.
- [Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyushu-natural-animal-park-african-safari): Oita, Zoo. A large drive-through safari park with about 70 species and 1,400 animals along a 6 km road. Drive your own car, or take the Jungle Bus and feed lions and bears through the bars.
- [Matsumae Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/matsumae-castle): Hokkaido, Castle. Hokkaido’s northern frontier history comes into focus at Matsumae Castle, where an original gate and reconstructed keep overlook the Tsugaru Strait. The surrounding park adds an unusually varied display of cherry blossoms in spring.
- [Michi-no-Eki Fujikawa Rakuza](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-fujikawa-rakuza): Shizuoka, Michi no eki. A roadside station joined to the Tokyo-bound Fujikawa service area of the Tomei Expressway. On a clear day Mount Fuji fills the windows, and a 14-meter planetarium dome gives you something to do when it doesn't.
- [Michi-no-Eki Fujiyoshida](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-fujiyoshida): Yamanashi, Michi no eki. A busy station just off Route 138 near Kawaguchiko IC. People queue at its free tap of Mount Fuji groundwater, and the food counter serves Yoshida udon, the firm local noodle.
- [Michi-no-Eki Ito Marine Town](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-ito-marine-town): Shizuoka, Michi no eki. A roadside station and harbour stop beside Ito Sunrise Marina on Route 135. Day-trip onsen baths face the sea, a free footbath sits by the water, and the shops sell Izu dried fish and seafood bowls.
