- [Kuju Mountains](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kuju-mountains): Oita, Mountain. A cluster of volcanic peaks on the Oita highlands whose top, Nakadake at 1,791 meters, is the highest point on mainland Kyushu. Most hikers start at Makinoto Pass (1,330 m) or Chojabaru (1,040 m), and in May and June the Miyama-kirishima azaleas turn the upper slopes pink and the car parks fill.
- [Lake Ikeda](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-ikeda): Kagoshima, Attraction. A round caldera lake about 15 km around and 233 meters deep, the largest lake in Kyushu, with Mount Kaimon across the water. Giant eels up to 2 meters long live in it, and the shore has flower beds, a lakeside cafe and free parking, but buses are few.
- [Michi-no-Eki Ito Marine Town](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-ito-marine-town): Shizuoka, Michi no eki. A roadside station and harbour stop beside Ito Sunrise Marina on Route 135. Day-trip onsen baths face the sea, a free footbath sits by the water, and the shops sell Izu dried fish and seafood bowls.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kamae](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kamae): Oita, Michi no eki. A fishing-port station on Route 388 in Kamae, at the southern tip of Oita next to the Miyazaki border. Since 2019 it has called itself Buri Laboratory and leans hard on farmed yellowtail, with a seafood restaurant and a market full of dried fish.
- [Mount Katsuragi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-katsuragi): Nara, Mountain. A 959 m mountain on the Nara-Osaka border above Gose, with a wide grassy summit plateau that turns red with azaleas around mid-May. The Kintetsu ropeway climbs in about 6 minutes (1,500 yen return), then it is a 15-minute walk. May weekends mean long queues and a full car park; the susuki grass season in autumn is much quieter.
- [Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nagasaki-atomic-bomb-museum): Nagasaki, Museum. The city museum on the hill above the hypocenter, covering the bombing of August 9, 1945, the damage it caused, and the history of nuclear weapons. Adults pay 200 yen, everyone of high school age and younger is free, and most visitors spend about an hour.
- [Okazaki Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okazaki-castle): Aichi, Castle. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the man who founded the Tokugawa shogunate, was born in this castle. The concrete keep dates from 1959 and holds a history museum with a top-floor lookout; entry is 300 yen.
- [Saidai-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/saidai-ji): Nara, Temple. Once the western counterpart of Todai-ji, now a set of Edo-period halls three minutes from a busy Kintetsu junction. It is known for the Ochamori, where tea is whisked in a bowl over 30 cm across and passed round, and for the Nara-period demons under the feet of its Four Heavenly Kings. Individuals can only join the tea ceremony on a few fixed days a year.
- [Sefa-utaki](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sefa-utaki): Okinawa, Historic site. The holiest site of the Ryukyu Kingdom: a forest on a limestone headland in Nanjo, where a slippery stone path leads to prayer sites under overhanging rock. It is one of the nine parts of the Gusuku Sites World Heritage property. Admission rose to 600 yen on 1 October 2026, the site shuts for six days a year by the lunar calendar, and repairs limit what you can see until 5 January 2027.
- [Takamatsu Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/takamatsu-castle): Kagawa, Castle. Takamatsu’s waterfront castle survives as Tamamo Park, where seawater fills the moats beside original turrets. The absent keep leaves room to focus on stone defenses, formal gardens and the castle’s unusual relationship with the Seto Inland Sea.
- [Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokyo-metropolitan-teien-art-museum): Tokyo, Museum. The 1933 home of Prince Asaka, with main rooms by the French Art Deco designers Henri Rapin and René Lalique, opened as an art museum in 1983 and is an Important Cultural Property. Exhibition tickets vary by show, while the lawn, Japanese garden and Western garden cost 200 yen on their own.
- [Tomioka Hachimangu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tomioka-hachimangu): Tokyo, Shrine. Founded in 1627 and known locally as Fukagawa no Hachiman-sama, the shrine where Edo's ticketed sumo tournaments began. Its summer festival centers on August 15, and spectators throw water over the mikoshi bearers; every third year 53 neighborhood mikoshi parade together.
- [Yahiko Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yahiko-shrine): Niigata, Shrine. The first-ranked shrine of the old Echigo province, at the foot of 634 m Mount Yahiko, whose summit holds its inner sanctuary. The halls were rebuilt in 1916 after a fire in 1912, worshippers bow twice and clap four times, and a free shuttle bus from beside the main hall connects to the Mount Yahiko Ropeway.
- [Akishino-dera](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/akishino-dera): Nara, Temple. A quiet temple a short bus ride north of Yamato-Saidaiji, with a National Treasure main hall from the Kamakura period and the Gigeiten, a goddess of the arts whose Nara-period lacquer head sits on a Kamakura wooden body. Moss covers the woodland where the old Golden Hall and pagodas once stood. Small, and done in under an hour.
- [Ehime Children's Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ehime-children-s-castle): Ehime, Park. A prefectural children's park on about 35 hectares of wooded hill south of Matsuyama. Entry is free; the ladybug monorail, bobsleigh, boats and buggies cost a few hundred yen each. Easy to pair with Tobe Zoo next door.
