- [Mount Akagi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-akagi): Gunma, Mountain. A ring of peaks around a caldera above Maebashi, with Lake Onuma and the red halls of Akagi Shrine at the center. Kurobi-san, the 1,828-meter high point, is a steep half-day loop from the lake shore.
- [Mount Amagi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-amagi): Shizuoka, Mountain. Not one peak but a range in the middle of the Izu Peninsula, on Japan's list of 100 Famous Mountains. The usual hike is an 8.4 km loop from Amagi Kogen over Banjiro-dake and Banzaburo-dake, at 1,406 m the highest point in Izu, through beech forest and Amagi rhododendrons that flower in May.
- [Mount Katsuragi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-katsuragi): Nara, Mountain. A 959 m mountain on the Nara-Osaka border above Gose, with a wide grassy summit plateau that turns red with azaleas around mid-May. The Kintetsu ropeway climbs in about 6 minutes (1,500 yen return), then it is a 15-minute walk. May weekends mean long queues and a full car park; the susuki grass season in autumn is much quieter.
- [Mount Moiwa](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-moiwa): Hokkaido, Mountain. A 531 m forested hill on the south-west edge of Sapporo, reached by a ropeway and then the small Mo-risu Car cable car. The summit deck looks over the whole city grid; a round trip on both is 2,100 yen, and on clear evenings the queue for the ride up gets long.
- [Okukinu Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okukinu-onsen): Tochigi, Onsen. Four inns at the head of the Kinu River inside Nikko National Park: Kaniyu, Hatchonoyu, Nikkozawa Onsen and Teshirozawa Onsen. No private cars or taxis go past Meotobuchi, so you walk in on a forest trail (80 to 90 minutes to the nearest inns, 2 to 2.5 hours to Teshirozawa) or, if you are staying at Kaniyu or Hatchonoyu, ride the inn's shuttle.
- [Rinno-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/rinno-ji): Tochigi, Temple. The Tendai temple that has run Nikko's mountain worship since the monk Shodo opened it in 766. Two sites ten minutes apart: Sanbutsudo, the main hall with three gilded Buddhas about 7.5 metres from pedestal to the top of the halo, and Taiyuin, the mausoleum of the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, uphill next to Futarasan Shrine. Separate tickets from Tosho-gu. One of the four parts of the Shrines and Temples of Nikko World Heritage property.
- [Sada Chinkabashi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sada-chinkabashi): Kochi, Landmark. The longest submersible bridge on the Shimanto River: 291.6 meters long, 4.2 meters wide, with no railings on either side, and still a local road that cars drive across. When the river floods, it goes under. About 15 minutes by car or 40 minutes by bicycle from Nakamura Station.
- [Sefa-utaki](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sefa-utaki): Okinawa, Historic site. The holiest site of the Ryukyu Kingdom: a forest on a limestone headland in Nanjo, where a slippery stone path leads to prayer sites under overhanging rock. It is one of the nine parts of the Gusuku Sites World Heritage property. Admission rose to 600 yen on 1 October 2026, the site shuts for six days a year by the lunar calendar, and repairs limit what you can see until 5 January 2027.
- [Sendai Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sendai-castle-ruins): Miyagi, Castle. Above Sendai on wooded Aobayama, Date Masamune’s former stronghold combines imposing stone walls with an expansive city view. The mounted statue marks the familiar panorama, while the surviving castle landscape reveals the hill’s defensive importance.
- [Soji-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/soji-ji): Kanagawa, Temple. One of the two head temples of Soto Zen, founded in 1321 on the Noto Peninsula and moved to Tsurumi in Yokohama in 1911. The grounds are free, and a monthly English zazen session costs 500 yen with no booking needed.
- [Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokyo-metropolitan-teien-art-museum): Tokyo, Museum. The 1933 home of Prince Asaka, with main rooms by the French Art Deco designers Henri Rapin and René Lalique, opened as an art museum in 1983 and is an Important Cultural Property. Exhibition tickets vary by show, while the lawn, Japanese garden and Western garden cost 200 yen on their own.
- [Tomioka Hachimangu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tomioka-hachimangu): Tokyo, Shrine. Founded in 1627 and known locally as Fukagawa no Hachiman-sama, the shrine where Edo's ticketed sumo tournaments began. Its summer festival centers on August 15, and spectators throw water over the mikoshi bearers; every third year 53 neighborhood mikoshi parade together.
- [Yahiko Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yahiko-shrine): Niigata, Shrine. The first-ranked shrine of the old Echigo province, at the foot of 634 m Mount Yahiko, whose summit holds its inner sanctuary. The halls were rebuilt in 1916 after a fire in 1912, worshippers bow twice and clap four times, and a free shuttle bus from beside the main hall connects to the Mount Yahiko Ropeway.
- [Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chiran-peace-museum-for-kamikaze-pilots): Kagoshima, Museum. A museum on the site of the wartime Chiran airfield that displays the portraits, letters and wills of the 1,036 army airmen who died in the 1945 special attack operations around Okinawa. Admission is 500 yen, and it is open every day.
- [Enjo-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/enjo-ji): Nara, Temple. A temple in Ninnikusen, in the hills east of Nara city on the old Yagyu road, with a late Heian pond garden and a seated Dainichi Nyorai that Unkei signed in 1176, probably in his twenties. It is his earliest known signed work and a National Treasure. Getting there means a Nara Kotsu bus that runs only about seven times a day.
