- [Seimei Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/seimei-shrine): Kyoto, Shrine. A small shrine on busy Horikawa-dori, built in 1007 on the site of the house of Abe no Seimei, the court diviner of novels, manga and films. Entry is free, it is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00, and the five-pointed star is on almost everything.
- [Yasaka Pagoda (Hokan-ji)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yasaka-pagoda-hokan-ji): Kyoto, Temple. A 46-metre, five-storey pagoda rebuilt in 1440 that closes the view down Yasaka-dori. The street is the draw and it is packed by mid-morning; the inside opens only on irregular days.
- [Michi-no-Eki Woody Keihoku](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-woody-keihoku): Kyoto, Michi no eki. In Shuzan, north of central Kyoto, Woody Keihoku connects a farm shop and restaurant with the surrounding forestry country. Browse local produce and woodcraft before continuing toward the temples, rivers and villages of the Keihoku area.
- [Michi-no-Eki Miyama Fureai Hiroba](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-miyama-fureai-hiroba): Kyoto, Michi no eki. Miyama Fureai Hiroba combines the Flat Miyama farm shop, a dairy counter and visitor information on Route 162. It is a useful food and planning stop before visiting Miyama villages, with milk-based sweets among the local specialties.
- [Michi-no-Eki Nagomi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-nagomi): Kyoto, Michi no eki. Nagomi sits beside the Yura River on Route 27 in northern Kyotamba. Farm vegetables, Wachi specialties and a terrace make it a useful place to break a countryside drive, with food counters that deserve a separate check of their hours.
- [Hosen-in](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hosen-in): Kyoto, Temple. A small Tendai temple at the far end of Ohara's approach lane, beyond Sanzen-in, where the 1,000-yen entry includes matcha and a sweet served facing a garden framed by the hall's pillars. A 700-year-old pine fills the view, and the corridor ceiling is made of blood-stained floorboards from Fushimi Castle.
- [Kyoto Botanical Garden](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyoto-botanical-garden): Kyoto, Garden. Opened in 1924 and billed as Japan's oldest public botanical garden: 24 hectares by the Kamo River, about 500 cherry trees and a large glass conservatory, all for 500 yen. Exit 3 of Kitayama subway station opens onto the north gate.
- [Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/asahi-group-oyamazaki-villa-museum-of-art): Kyoto, Museum. A former hillside villa brings domestic architecture, craft and modern gallery spaces together above Yamazaki. Gardens and Tadao Ando’s additions make the museum itself part of the experience, an easy cultural stop between Osaka and Kyoto.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kyoto Shinkoetsu Mura](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kyoto-shinkoetsu-mura): Kyoto, Michi no eki. Beside Sonobe IC, Kyoto Shinkoetsu Mura gathers local rice, vegetables and prepared products from the surrounding farming communities. It is a compact stop before heading farther into Nantan, toward Hiyoshi or the Rurikei area.
- [Iwashimizu Hachimangu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/iwashimizu-hachimangu): Kyoto, Shrine. A hilltop Hachiman shrine founded in 859, whose ten main buildings became National Treasures in 2016. A three-minute cable car from Keihan Iwashimizu-hachimangu Station does most of the climb.
- [Michi-no-Eki Galleria Kameoka](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-galleria-kameoka): Kyoto, Michi no eki. Galleria Kameoka combines a roadside station with a public learning and events facility on Route 9. Its Atrio market sells Kameoka specialties, making this a useful shopping stop between Osaka, Kyoto and the Tamba countryside.
- [Ujigami Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ujigami-shrine): Kyoto, Shrine. A small, free shrine on the east bank of the Uji River whose main hall Kyoto Prefecture lists as the oldest shrine building in Japan; tree-ring dating in 2004 put its timber at around 1060. The haiden in front is early Kamakura and built like a nobleman's house. Plain weathered wood, no paint, and done in 20 minutes. One of the 17 parts of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage property.
- [Yoshiminedera Temple](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yoshiminedera-temple): Kyoto, Temple. Yoshiminedera spreads across Kyoto’s western hills, with terraced temple paths, wide city views and the remarkable spreading Yuryu pine. Seasonal flowers reward the climb, but reaching this mountain temple now requires more planning than older bus guides suggest.
- [Ashiu Forest](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ashiu-forest): Kyoto, Trail. About 4,200 hectares of beech and cedar forest at the source of the Yura River, run by Kyoto University as a research forest since 1921. You can walk three short routes on your own after filling in an entry form; the Kamitani valley and the rest of the interior are open only on a certified guided tour. It is about two hours' drive north of Kyoto, and closed under snow from mid-December to mid-April.
- [Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nagaoka-tenmangu-shrine): Kyoto, Shrine. Crimson Kirishima azaleas line the pond crossing at Nagaoka Tenmangu, a shrine associated with scholar Sugawara no Michizane. Beyond the spring display, waterside paths and wooded precincts offer a rewarding stop along the Hankyu route between Osaka and Kyoto.
