- [Okazaki Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okazaki-castle): Aichi, Castle. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the man who founded the Tokugawa shogunate, was born in this castle. The concrete keep dates from 1959 and holds a history museum with a top-floor lookout; entry is 300 yen.
- [Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okinawa-prefectural-museum-art-museum): Okinawa, Museum. Okinawa's prefectural museum and art museum share one building in Omoromachi, Naha, opened in 2007. The museum covers the islands' nature, archaeology, Ryukyu history and folk culture; the art museum shows modern and contemporary work by Okinawan artists. The museum's permanent exhibition is 530 yen.
- [Rebun Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/rebun-island): Hokkaido, Island. A long, low island west of Wakkanai, reached only by a ferry of about two hours. From late May to August its grassy west-coast trails are covered in alpine flowers, including an orchid that grows nowhere else. The trails close for winter in October, and from November the ferry drops to two sailings a day each way.
- [Sada Chinkabashi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sada-chinkabashi): Kochi, Landmark. The longest submersible bridge on the Shimanto River: 291.6 meters long, 4.2 meters wide, with no railings on either side, and still a local road that cars drive across. When the river floods, it goes under. About 15 minutes by car or 40 minutes by bicycle from Nakamura Station.
- [Sendai Castle Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sendai-castle-ruins): Miyagi, Castle. Above Sendai on wooded Aobayama, Date Masamune’s former stronghold combines imposing stone walls with an expansive city view. The mounted statue marks the familiar panorama, while the surviving castle landscape reveals the hill’s defensive importance.
- [Showa Kinen Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/showa-kinen-park): Tokyo, Park. A 180-hectare national park built on the site of the former US Tachikawa air base, with seasonal flower fields, a Japanese garden and two long ginkgo avenues. Adult entry is 450 yen, and the West Tachikawa Gate is a 2-minute walk from Nishi-Tachikawa Station.
- [Shukkei-en](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shukkei-en): Hiroshima, Garden. A strolling garden begun in 1620 for the Asano lords of Hiroshima, laid out around a central pond with a stone arched bridge. The 1945 atomic bombing destroyed most of its buildings; it reopened in 1951. Entry is 350 yen.
- [Soji-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/soji-ji): Kanagawa, Temple. One of the two head temples of Soto Zen, founded in 1321 on the Noto Peninsula and moved to Tsurumi in Yokohama in 1911. The grounds are free, and a monthly English zazen session costs 500 yen with no booking needed.
- [Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokyo-metropolitan-art-museum): Tokyo, Museum. Opened in 1926 as Japan's first public art museum. There is no permanent collection display: the galleries hold ticketed special exhibitions and shows by art associations, so entry to the building is free and each exhibition sets its own fee.
- [Zojo-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/zojo-ji): Tokyo, Temple. The Tokugawa family temple in Shiba, with Tokyo Tower rising right behind the main hall. The grounds are free; the walled mausoleum of six shoguns costs 500 yen and closes on Tuesdays.
- [Fukuyama Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/fukuyama-castle): Hiroshima, Castle. Immediately above Fukuyama’s shinkansen station, a reconstructed keep joins surviving gates and turrets on a commanding stone platform. The museum introduces the castle’s domain history, while a circuit of the grounds reveals the difference between original structures and modern rebuilding.
- [Ganryujima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ganryujima): Yamaguchi, Island. A flat, uninhabited islet in the Kanmon Strait, officially named Funashima, where by tradition Miyamoto Musashi defeated Sasaki Kojiro in 1612. It is a short, cheap boat trip from Karato in Shimonoseki, with statues of the two swordsmen and a shoreline path.
- [Hiroshima Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hiroshima-castle): Hiroshima, Castle. Hiroshima Castle’s moats, stone walls and reconstructed Ninomaru buildings trace the city’s origins as a castle town. The keep closed to visitors in March 2026, but the grounds still offer a worthwhile walk through this layered historic site.
- [Kimpusen-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kimpusen-ji): Nara, Temple. The head temple of Kimpusen Shugen Honshu, a Shugendo school, halfway up Mount Yoshino. Its main hall, the Zao-do, is a 34-metre wooden building from about 1592 that holds three blue Zao Gongen statues, the central one over 7 metres tall. They are hidden buddhas, shown only during set weeks in spring and autumn; the rest of the year you pay to look at closed doors.
- [Lake Kussharo](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-kussharo): Hokkaido, Attraction. Japan's largest caldera lake, about 80 square kilometres, in Akan-Mashu National Park. At Sunayu hot water seeps up through the sand so you can scoop out your own bath, whooper swans winter on the unfrozen shallows, and the Wakoto Peninsula has a 2.5 km loop past steaming vents.
