- [Sukayu Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sukayu-onsen): Aomori, Onsen. A single mountain inn at about 890 m in the Hakkoda range, known for the Hiba Sennin-buro, a pillarless mixed bath of hiba wood about 160 tatami mats in size, filled with strongly acidic sulfur water. The weather station here measured 566 cm of snow on February 26, 2013, the deepest since JMA's automated stations began keeping statistics in 1979.
- [Yanbaru](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yanbaru): Okinawa, Region. The hilly, forested north of Okinawa Island, spread over the villages of Kunigami, Ogimi and Higashi. Its subtropical evergreen forest is the only home of the flightless Okinawa rail and the Okinawa woodpecker, and about 7,700 hectares of it make up the Northern part of Okinawa Island, one of the four areas of Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, Northern part of Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island, a World Natural Heritage site inscribed in 2021. Come by car: buses are sparse and the best-known waterfall trail is closed.
- [Yasaka Pagoda (Hokan-ji)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yasaka-pagoda-hokan-ji): Kyoto, Temple. A 46-metre, five-storey pagoda rebuilt in 1440 that closes the view down Yasaka-dori. The street is the draw and it is packed by mid-morning; the inside opens only on irregular days.
- [Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yokohama-hakkeijima-sea-paradise): Kanagawa, Amusement park. A man-made island in southern Yokohama with four aquariums and a seaside ride area. Walking onto the island is free; you pay for the aquariums and rides, from the Surf Coaster Leviathan over the water to rides added in August 2026.
- [Doai Station](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/doai-station): Gunma, Landmark. An unstaffed JR Joetsu Line station whose down-line platform sits inside the Shin-Shimizu Tunnel, about 70 meters below the station building. Getting out means climbing 462 steps, then another 24, which takes about 10 minutes. Only five trains stop each way per day, so plan around the timetable.
- [Hakone Open-Air Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hakone-open-air-museum): Kanagawa, Museum. Japan's first open-air art museum, opened in 1969: about 120 sculptures spread over 70,000 square meters of hillside lawns, a Picasso Pavilion and a hot-spring footbath. It is two minutes from Chokoku-no-Mori Station, and adult tickets are 2,000 yen at the gate or 1,800 yen online.
- [Hateruma Island](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hateruma-island): Okinawa, Island. The southernmost inhabited island in Japan: about 440 people, sugarcane fields, the white sand of Nishihama and the Southernmost Point monument at Cape Takanazaki. The boat from Ishigaki crosses open sea and is often cancelled in winter, and the small plane that also flies here has had long suspensions in 2026.
- [Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hida-folk-village-hida-no-sato): Gifu, Museum. An open-air museum of about 30 old farmhouses, storehouses and workshops moved here from across the Hida region, four of them Important Cultural Properties. It is a short bus ride from central Takayama, open daily, and costs 700 yen.
- [Hiroshima Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hiroshima-castle): Hiroshima, Castle. Hiroshima Castle’s moats, stone walls and reconstructed Ninomaru buildings trace the city’s origins as a castle town. The keep closed to visitors in March 2026, but the grounds still offer a worthwhile walk through this layered historic site.
- [Holy Resurrection Cathedral (Nikolai-do)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/holy-resurrection-cathedral-nikolai-do): Tokyo, Historic site. The main cathedral of the Orthodox Church in Japan, a Byzantine-style church with a 35-meter green dome, consecrated in 1891 and rebuilt after the 1923 earthquake. The interior opens to visitors only in the afternoon, for a 300-yen donation.
- [Jinata Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jinata-onsen): Tokyo, Onsen. Rock pools at the foot of a narrow cleft on Shikinejima's south coast, where iron-rich spring water at about 80°C mixes with the sea. It is free and open around the clock, but you need a swimsuit, a staircase of about 170 steps, and the right hour of the tide.
- [Kan'ei-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kan-ei-ji): Tokyo, Temple. Founded in 1625 by the monk Tenkai as the 'Hiei of the east', Kan'ei-ji was the Tokugawa family temple and holds the graves of six shoguns. The 1868 Battle of Ueno burned it, and today's main hall is a building moved from Kawagoe in 1879.
- [Kawasaki Daishi](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kawasaki-daishi): Kanagawa, Temple. Heiken-ji, founded in 1128 and known as Kawasaki Daishi, is a head temple of Chisan Shingon Buddhism where people come to ward off bad luck. Entry to the grounds is free, and it is an 8-minute walk from Kawasaki-Daishi Station on the Keikyu Daishi Line.
- [Lake Shikotsu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-shikotsu): Hokkaido, Attraction. A caldera lake about 360 m deep, the second deepest in Japan, and clear enough that the shallows glow blue. It almost never freezes over, and in winter its sprayed water becomes the ice sculptures of the Ice Festival. Buses from New Chitose Airport take about 55 minutes.
- [Lake Shoji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-shoji): Yamanashi, Attraction. The smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes, about 0.5 km² and 6.8 km around, and the quietest. From the north shore Fuji rises behind the smaller cone of Omuroyama, the view locals call Kodaki Fuji, Fuji holding a child. Few buses and almost no shops: come by car or plan around the Blue Line.
