- [Yanbaru](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yanbaru): Okinawa, Region. The hilly, forested north of Okinawa Island, spread over the villages of Kunigami, Ogimi and Higashi. Its subtropical evergreen forest is the only home of the flightless Okinawa rail and the Okinawa woodpecker, and about 7,700 hectares of it make up the Northern part of Okinawa Island, one of the four areas of Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, Northern part of Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island, a World Natural Heritage site inscribed in 2021. Come by car: buses are sparse and the best-known waterfall trail is closed.
- [Cape Soya](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/cape-soya): Hokkaido, Landmark. The northern tip of Hokkaido's main island at 45 degrees 31 minutes 22 seconds north, marked by a triangular monument modeled on a point of the North Star. On clear days Sakhalin shows on the horizon about 43 km away. It is 50 minutes from Wakkanai Station by a bus that runs very few times a day.
- [Chogosonshi-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chogosonshi-ji): Nara, Temple. A sprawling temple on Mount Shigi in Heguri, given over to Bishamonten and to tigers: legend says Prince Shotoku met the god here in the year, day and hour of the tiger. A 6-metre tiger with a swinging head waits near the entrance, the main hall's wooden stage looks out over the Nara basin, and the treasure hall shows copies of the 12th-century Shigisan Engi scrolls. The grounds are free, and the bus from Oji takes about 22 minutes.
- [Enjo-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/enjo-ji): Nara, Temple. A temple in Ninnikusen, in the hills east of Nara city on the old Yagyu road, with a late Heian pond garden and a seated Dainichi Nyorai that Unkei signed in 1176, probably in his twenties. It is his earliest known signed work and a National Treasure. Getting there means a Nara Kotsu bus that runs only about seven times a day.
- [Gokanosho](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/gokanosho): Kumamoto, Region. Five hamlets in the mountains of eastern Yatsushiro, said to have been settled by Heike and Sugawara refugees. A 70-metre waterfall, long suspension bridges, and some of Kumamoto's best November colour. No bus goes in, and the roads are narrow and twisting.
- [Hakone Open-Air Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hakone-open-air-museum): Kanagawa, Museum. Japan's first open-air art museum, opened in 1969: about 120 sculptures spread over 70,000 square meters of hillside lawns, a Picasso Pavilion and a hot-spring footbath. It is two minutes from Chokoku-no-Mori Station, and adult tickets are 2,000 yen at the gate or 1,800 yen online.
- [Hiroshima Castle](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/hiroshima-castle): Hiroshima, Castle. Hiroshima Castle’s moats, stone walls and reconstructed Ninomaru buildings trace the city’s origins as a castle town. The keep closed to visitors in March 2026, but the grounds still offer a worthwhile walk through this layered historic site.
- [Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ichijodani-asakura-family-historic-ruins): Fukui, Historic site. The site of the Asakura clan's castle town, which Oda Nobunaga's army burned in 1573, now a 278-hectare Special Historic Site with excavated gardens, a 200-metre stretch of rebuilt street, and a prefectural museum that opened in 2022. The museum costs 700 yen; the rebuilt street is ticketed separately.
- [Lake Shoji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/lake-shoji): Yamanashi, Attraction. The smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes, about 0.5 km² and 6.8 km around, and the quietest. From the north shore Fuji rises behind the smaller cone of Omuroyama, the view locals call Kodaki Fuji, Fuji holding a child. Few buses and almost no shops: come by car or plan around the Blue Line.
- [MOA Museum of Art](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/moa-museum-of-art): Shizuoka, Museum. A private museum on the hill above Atami Station with about 3,500 works of mostly East Asian art, three of them National Treasures. Ogata Korin's Red and White Plum Blossoms screen is shown only for a few weeks each year, timed to the plum season around February. Admission is 2,000 yen.
- [Meguro Parasitological Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/meguro-parasitological-museum): Tokyo, Museum. A small private museum devoted to parasites, founded in 1953 by the doctor Satoru Kamegai. About 300 preserved specimens fill two floors, including an 8.8 m Japanese broad tapeworm, and entry is free.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kyoda](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kyoda): Okinawa, Michi no eki. Okinawa's first registered roadside station, on Route 58 just past Kyoda IC where the Okinawa Expressway ends. Most drivers heading north stop here for hot tempura and Yanbaru products.
- [Michi-no-Eki Marine Dream Nou](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-marine-dream-nou): Niigata, Michi no eki. A Route 8 station next to Nou fishing port, known for Kaniya Yokocho, a row of stalls boiling and selling red snow crab landed at the port. Skip January and February, when the crab season is closed.
- [Michi-no-Eki Phoenix](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-phoenix): Miyazaki, Michi no eki. An old clifftop drive-in on the Nichinan coast, about 1 km south of Horikiri Pass. The building is tired, but the view down to the ridged Devil's Washboard rocks and the Pacific is the reason to stop.
- [Michi-no-Eki Shikabe Kanketsusen Koen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-shikabe-kanketsusen-koen): Hokkaido, Michi no eki. A roadside station on Route 278 in Shikabe, built beside a hot-spring geyser that goes off roughly every ten minutes. Pay a small fee to watch it from a footbath, then buy scallops or shrimp in the shop and steam them over the spring yourself.
