- [Gokanosho](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/gokanosho): Kumamoto, Region. Five hamlets in the mountains of eastern Yatsushiro, said to have been settled by Heike and Sugawara refugees. A 70-metre waterfall, long suspension bridges, and some of Kumamoto's best November colour. No bus goes in, and the roads are narrow and twisting.
- [Kyushu Natural Animal Park African Safari](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyushu-natural-animal-park-african-safari): Oita, Zoo. A large drive-through safari park with about 70 species and 1,400 animals along a 6 km road. Drive your own car, or take the Jungle Bus and feed lions and bears through the bars.
- [Michi-no-Eki Akita Port](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-akita-port): Akita, Michi no eki. Port Tower Selion, 143 metres of glass at Tsuchizaki harbour, doubles as a roadside station. Ride up to the free deck at 100 metres, then shop for kiritanpo and iburigakko on the ground floor before heading for the Oga Peninsula.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kashima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kashima): Saga, Michi no eki. Saga's first registered roadside station sits right on the Ariake Sea. At low tide the bay drains into wide mudflats, and this is where the Kashima Gatalympics mud games are held each year.
- [Michi-no-Eki Kyoda](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-kyoda): Okinawa, Michi no eki. Okinawa's first registered roadside station, on Route 58 just past Kyoda IC where the Okinawa Expressway ends. Most drivers heading north stop here for hot tempura and Yanbaru products.
- [Michi-no-Eki Marine Dream Nou](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-marine-dream-nou): Niigata, Michi no eki. A Route 8 station next to Nou fishing port, known for Kaniya Yokocho, a row of stalls boiling and selling red snow crab landed at the port. Skip January and February, when the crab season is closed.
- [Michi-no-Eki Mizuho-no-Sato Sarabiki](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-mizuho-no-sato-sarabiki): Kyoto, Michi no eki. Mizuho-no-Sato Sarabiki pairs a produce market with soba made from Kyotamba buckwheat on Route 173. Reopened in July 2026, the station is also a starting point for visits to the separate Greenland Mizuho sports and accommodation facilities.
- [Michi-no-Eki Phoenix](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-phoenix): Miyazaki, Michi no eki. An old clifftop drive-in on the Nichinan coast, about 1 km south of Horikiri Pass. The building is tired, but the view down to the ridged Devil's Washboard rocks and the Pacific is the reason to stop.
- [Minobusan Kuon-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/minobusan-kuon-ji): Yamanashi, Temple. Head temple of the Nichiren Shu school, where Nichiren lived from 1274 and where his ashes rest. Most visitors climb the 287 steep stone steps of the Bodaitei to the main hall. The weeping cherry, about 400 years old, draws big crowds when it flowers around the end of March. The grounds are free.
- [Mount Omuro](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-omuro): Shizuoka, Mountain. A 580-meter scoria cone in Ito, a protected natural monument that nobody may climb on foot. A six-minute chairlift (1,000 yen return) takes you to a 1 km path around the crater rim, with archery inside the crater and Mount Fuji on clear days. The grass is burned off each February.
- [Mount Unzen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-unzen): Nagasaki, Mountain. The volcanic massif at the center of the Shimabara Peninsula, reached by the one-way Nita Pass road and a 3-minute ropeway to Myokendake. Hikers can climb Fugendake (1,359 m), but Heisei Shinzan, the 1,483-meter lava dome left by the 1990 to 1995 eruption, is off limits.
- [Okinawa Peace Memorial Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okinawa-peace-memorial-park): Okinawa, Park. A park of about 40 hectares on the coastal plateau at Mabuni, at the southern end of Okinawa Island, known as the place where the Battle of Okinawa ended. The Cornerstone of Peace carries the names of everyone who died in the battle, whatever their nationality, and the Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum (300 yen) tells its history.
- [Sarushima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sarushima): Kanagawa, Island. A small uninhabited island off Yokosuka, described by the city as the only natural island in Tokyo Bay, with Meiji-era brick fort buildings and tunnels in the forest. The ferry from Mikasa Terminal takes about 10 minutes, and the round trip plus park admission costs an adult 2,100 to 2,500 yen depending on the day.
- [Shiiba Village](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shiiba-village): Miyazaki, Region. A mountain village in the Kyushu Mountains where, the story goes, a Genji general sent to hunt down Heike refugees fell in love with one of them instead. About 26 hamlets keep their own all-night kagura, and the village still burns forest plots to farm. The bus from Hyugashi Station stops short of the village centre, so the last leg is a booked taxi.
- [Showa Kinen Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/showa-kinen-park): Tokyo, Park. A 180-hectare national park built on the site of the former US Tachikawa air base, with seasonal flower fields, a Japanese garden and two long ginkgo avenues. Adult entry is 450 yen, and the West Tachikawa Gate is a 2-minute walk from Nishi-Tachikawa Station.
