- [Jakko-in](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jakko-in): Kyoto, Temple. The small Ohara nunnery where Kenreimon-in retired after the Heike were destroyed at Dannoura. The Tale of the Heike closes here, and so does most of the valley's foot traffic.
- [Jinata Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/jinata-onsen): Tokyo, Onsen. Rock pools at the foot of a narrow cleft on Shikinejima's south coast, where iron-rich spring water at about 80°C mixes with the sea. It is free and open around the clock, but you need a swimsuit, a staircase of about 170 steps, and the right hour of the tide.
- [Kasugayama Primeval Forest](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kasugayama-primeval-forest): Nara, Trail. The forest on Mount Kasuga behind Kasuga Taisha, kept as the shrine's sacred ground since hunting and logging were banned in 841. It is a Special Natural Monument and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara World Heritage site. You cannot go into the forest itself; you walk the 9.4 km path around it, best on the Takisaka stone road to the Kasugayama cave Buddhas, carved in the 1150s. Free, but wet and lonely in places.
- [Okukinu Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/okukinu-onsen): Tochigi, Onsen. Four inns at the head of the Kinu River inside Nikko National Park: Kaniyu, Hatchonoyu, Nikkozawa Onsen and Teshirozawa Onsen. No private cars or taxis go past Meotobuchi, so you walk in on a forest trail (80 to 90 minutes to the nearest inns, 2 to 2.5 hours to Teshirozawa) or, if you are staying at Kaniyu or Hatchonoyu, ride the inn's shuttle.
- [Tojoko Toy Kingdom](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tojoko-toy-kingdom): Hyogo, Theme park. Ten indoor toy pavilions (Tomica and Plarail, Licca-chan, Sylvanian Families) plus about 15 small rides. Built for children from about two to eight; older kids will be done by lunch.
- [Tokugawa-en](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokugawa-en): Aichi, Garden. A 2.3-hectare pond garden on the site of an Owari Tokugawa lord's retirement residence from 1695, rebuilt as a Japanese garden in 2004 after wartime bombing. Entry is 300 yen, and it sits next to the Tokugawa Art Museum.
- [Tsukiji Hongan-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tsukiji-hongan-ji): Tokyo, Temple. A Jodo Shinshu temple whose 1934 main hall, designed by Ito Chuta, looks like ancient Indian Buddhist architecture outside and a traditional Shin hall inside. Free to enter, a minute from Tsukiji Station, with a cafe known for its 18-dish breakfast.
- [Ueno Toshogu](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ueno-toshogu): Tokyo, Shrine. Tokugawa Ieyasu's shrine in Ueno Park, founded in 1627; the gold-leaf Konjiki-den and its gates were rebuilt by Iemitsu in 1651 and have come through every disaster since. Walking up is free; seeing the hall up close inside the fence costs 700 yen.
- [Aoni Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/aoni-onsen): Aomori, Onsen. A single inn deep in the Aoni valley east of Kuroishi, lit at night by oil lamps instead of electric light, with four baths and no mobile signal. From December to March private cars are banned on the access road and the inn's booked shuttle is the only way in.
- [Eshima Ohashi Bridge](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/eshima-ohashi-bridge): Shimane, Landmark. A 1,446-meter road bridge over Lake Nakaumi between Matsue and Sakaiminato that a 2013 Daihatsu commercial made famous as "beta-bumi zaka", the slope you climb with the pedal floored. Through a long telephoto lens it looks like a wall. In reality the Shimane-side approach rises at 6.1 percent, about 3.5 degrees, and any car takes it easily.
- [Kobe Suma Sea World](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kobe-suma-sea-world): Hyogo, Aquarium. The aquarium that replaced Suma Aqualife Park, opened on 1 June 2024, with an orca stadium, the only orcas on show in western Japan. Adult tickets cost 2,900 to 3,700 yen depending on the date, and a timed ticket bought online is the safe bet.
- [Kyoto National Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyoto-national-museum): Kyoto, Museum. Opened in 1897 to protect the cultural property handed down in Kyoto, the museum shows its own collection and works deposited by temples and shrines in the Heisei Chishinkan, with paintings changed almost every month. The collection show costs 700 yen; special exhibitions take over the building several times a year at a higher price.
- [Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/noboribetsu-date-jidaimura): Hokkaido, Theme park. A recreated Edo-period town on the road up to Noboribetsu Onsen. No rides; the point is the shows, above all the ninja action at Ninja Kasumi Yashiki and the oiran dance, plus costume rental and hands-on games.
- [Seimei Shrine](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/seimei-shrine): Kyoto, Shrine. A small shrine on busy Horikawa-dori, built in 1007 on the site of the house of Abe no Seimei, the court diviner of novels, manga and films. Entry is free, it is open daily from 9:00 to 17:00, and the five-pointed star is on almost everything.
- [Tashirojima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tashirojima): Miyagi, Island. A small fishing island off Ishinomaki where cats wander the lanes and a tiny shrine honours one of them. The ferry runs only a few times a day and there is almost nothing to buy, so plan the day around the boat.
