- [Shibu Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shibu-onsen): Nagano, Onsen. A narrow, stone-paved onsen street in the Yokoyu valley with nine public bathhouses that are locked to everyone but residents and people staying the night. Your inn lends you the key. Day visitors can use only the ninth, Oyu, for 800 yen. Jigokudani Monkey Park is further up the same valley.
- [Yamato Museum (Kure Maritime Museum)](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yamato-museum-kure-maritime-museum): Hiroshima, Museum. Kure's naval and shipbuilding history museum, built around a 26.3-meter, one-tenth scale model of the battleship Yamato. It reopened on 23 April 2026 after a renovation that revised the model and the science galleries. Admission is 1,000 yen; closed on Tuesdays.
- [Chogosonshi-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chogosonshi-ji): Nara, Temple. A sprawling temple on Mount Shigi in Heguri, given over to Bishamonten and to tigers: legend says Prince Shotoku met the god here in the year, day and hour of the tiger. A 6-metre tiger with a swinging head waits near the entrance, the main hall's wooden stage looks out over the Nara basin, and the treasure hall shows copies of the 12th-century Shigisan Engi scrolls. The grounds are free, and the bus from Oji takes about 22 minutes.
- [Kamuiwakka Hot Falls](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kamuiwakka-hot-falls): Hokkaido, Onsen. A river in Shiretoko National Park that runs warm because hot spring water from Mount Io feeds it. You wade about 400 m upstream, over small waterfalls, to a pool at the fourth fall where the water reaches about 35 to 38C. Entry is booked and paid, July to September only, at the end of about 10 km of gravel road that is open roughly June to the start of October.
- [Korekawa Site](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/korekawa-site): Aomori, Historic site. A Jomon site in the southern hills of Hachinohe, Aomori, where a waterlogged ritual deposit preserved lacquered bows, combs, bracelets and bowls. It is one of the 17 parts of the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan World Heritage property. The excavated ground, the Nakai site, is closed for site improvement works for the time being, so a visit today means the Korekawa Jomon Museum next door, which is not itself part of the World Heritage site. Its National Treasure Gassho Dogu figurine comes from a different site across the river.
- [Kyozuan Arashiyama](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kyozuan-arashiyama): Kyoto, Attraction. A small takeaway tofu-sweets counter at the start of the path to Arashiyama's bamboo grove, about five minutes' walk from Randen Arashiyama Station. Its tofu soft serve, made with silken tofu as well as soy milk, is dense enough that the shop's sign says it won't fall out of an upside-down cone.
- [Kongobu-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/kongobu-ji): Wakayama, Temple. The administrative head temple of the Koyasan Shingon school, known for its sweeping tiled roof, painted sliding screens and Banryutei, said to be the largest rock garden in Japan.
- [Nijigen no Mori](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nijigen-no-mori): Hyogo, Theme park. An anime and manga theme park set in the forests of Awaji Island Park, with life-size attractions themed on Naruto, Godzilla, Crayon Shin-chan and Dragon Quest; free to enter, with each zone individually ticketed.
- [Sanrio Character Park Harmonyland](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/sanrio-character-park-harmonyland): Oita, Theme park. An open-air Sanrio theme park in the hills near Beppu, home to Hello Kitty, My Melody and Cinnamoroll, with parades, rides, shows and character greetings; the sister park to Tokyo's Sanrio Puroland.
- [Edo-Tokyo Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/edo-tokyo-museum): Tokyo, Museum. Tokyo's history museum next to the Ryogoku sumo hall, back open since March 31, 2026 after a renovation closure that began in April 2022. The permanent galleries on the 5th and 6th floors start with a full-size half of the Nihonbashi bridge and run from the Edo period to postwar Tokyo, for 800 yen.
- [Gotoku-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/gotoku-ji): Tokyo, Temple. The Ii family's Edo temple in Setagaya, where shelves of white beckoning cats surround the Shofuku-den hall. Free to enter from 6:00 to 17:00; the cats are sold at the temple office until 15:00, from 500 yen.
- [Honno-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/honno-ji): Kyoto, Temple. The Nichiren-school temple linked to Oda Nobunaga's death in 1582, rebuilt on Teramachi-dori in 1592. The grounds and Nobunaga's mausoleum are free; the treasure house costs 700 yen.
- [Miraikan](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/miraikan): Tokyo, Museum. Japan's national museum of current science, opened in Odaiba in 2001 and known for Geo-Cosmos, a 6-meter globe of OLED panels hanging in the atrium.
- [Nokonoshima Island Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/nokonoshima-island-park): Fukuoka, Park. A flower park on Nokonoshima Island in Hakata Bay, with fields of seasonal flowers overlooking the sea.
- [Shokoku-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shokoku-ji): Kyoto, Temple. The head temple of Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji, just north of the Imperial Palace, with Japan's oldest surviving dharma hall and its crying-dragon ceiling. The halls open only in spring and autumn; the Jotenkaku Museum on the grounds shows the three temples' treasures, with two Ito Jakuchu wall paintings always on view.
