- [Shokoku-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/shokoku-ji): Kyoto, Temple. The head temple of Kinkaku-ji and Ginkaku-ji, just north of the Imperial Palace, with Japan's oldest surviving dharma hall and its crying-dragon ceiling. The halls open only in spring and autumn; the Jotenkaku Museum on the grounds shows the three temples' treasures, with two Ito Jakuchu wall paintings always on view.
- [The National Art Center, Tokyo](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/the-national-art-center-tokyo): Tokyo, Museum. A national art center in Roppongi with no collection of its own, only temporary exhibitions in 12 galleries. Walking into Kurokawa Kisho's glass-fronted building, its atrium and cafes is free; each exhibition charges separately.
- [Wakura Onsen](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/wakura-onsen): Ishikawa, Onsen. A hot spring town on Nanao Bay whose salty water first rose from the sea. The 1 January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake shut it down. As of 16 July 2026, 11 of the 19 inns in the ryokan cooperative had reopened, with about 40% of the pre-quake rooms. The public bath, Soyu, has been open since March 2024. Kagaya, the best-known inn, is rebuilding and aims to reopen by the end of fiscal 2028.
- [Yayoi Kusama Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/yayoi-kusama-museum): Tokyo, Museum. The museum Yayoi Kusama founded in 2017 in a quiet corner of Shinjuku, showing her work in two exhibitions a year across five small floors. There are no tickets at the door: timed 90-minute slots cost 1,100 yen, go on sale online on the 1st of each month for the month after next, and often sell out. Kusama died on August 14, 2026, aged 97.
- [Michi-no-Eki Okukawachi Kuromaro-no-Sato](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-okukawachi-kuromaro-no-sato): Osaka, Michi no eki. A large roadside station in the wooded Okukawachi hills of Kawachinagano in southern Osaka, with a farm-direct market, a cafe and bakery, easy parking, and a summer soft serve topped with diced local peaches.
- [Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/osamu-tezuka-manga-museum): Hyogo, Museum. Takarazuka’s Tezuka museum explores the imagination behind Astro Boy and other influential manga through artwork, personal history and animation. Plan around its announced closure from December 1, 2026 through March 4, 2027 for building equipment work.
- [Tokyo Sea Life Park](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/tokyo-sea-life-park): Tokyo, Aquarium. Tokyo's public aquarium in Kasai Rinkai Park, open since 1989 under a glass dome by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, with Pacific bluefin tuna swimming laps of a ring-shaped tank and outdoor penguin enclosures. Adults pay 700 yen and children through elementary school are free. A new aquarium is being built next door, due to open in 2028.
- [Michi-no-Eki Minabe Ume Shinkokan](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/michi-no-eki-minabe-ume-shinkokan): Wakayama, Michi no eki. A roadside station and plum-culture hall in Minabe, Japan's top plum-growing town and home of the prized Nanko-ume, with exhibits, a large plum-products shop, and an ume (plum) soft serve.
- [Mitaki-dera](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mitaki-dera): Hiroshima, Temple. A Shingon temple on a wooded slope in Nishi Ward, named for the three small waterfalls on its grounds. Water from its streams is offered each year at the Peace Memorial Ceremony, and the red pagoda by the gate was moved here in 1951 to honor the atomic bomb victims. The path is steep and narrow, and autumn weekends get busy.
- [Chogosonshi-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/chogosonshi-ji): Nara, Temple. A sprawling temple on Mount Shigi in Heguri, given over to Bishamonten and to tigers: legend says Prince Shotoku met the god here in the year, day and hour of the tiger. A 6-metre tiger with a swinging head waits near the entrance, the main hall's wooden stage looks out over the Nara basin, and the treasure hall shows copies of the 12th-century Shigisan Engi scrolls. The grounds are free, and the bus from Oji takes about 22 minutes.
- [Higashi Hongan-ji](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/higashi-hongan-ji): Kyoto, Temple. Head temple of the Otani branch of Jodo Shinshu, with a Goei-do 76 metres wide that the temple counts among the world's largest wooden buildings. Free to enter, seven minutes' walk from Kyoto Station.
- [Ikeshima](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/ikeshima): Nagasaki, Island. A small island off the Sotome coast of Nagasaki that mined coal from 1959 until 2001. Most of the apartment blocks are empty now, about a hundred people remain, and former miners guide visitors through a real tunnel by trolley.
- [Miraikan](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/miraikan): Tokyo, Museum. Japan's national museum of current science, opened in Odaiba in 2001 and known for Geo-Cosmos, a 6-meter globe of OLED panels hanging in the atrium.
- [Mount Norikura](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-norikura): Gifu, Mountain. A volcano on the Gifu and Nagano border where the bus does most of the climbing: Tatamidaira, at 2,702 m, is the highest bus stop in Japan, and the 3,026 m summit, Kengamine, is about 90 minutes' walk away. Private cars are banned on both access roads, so everyone rides the shuttle.
- [Mount Yotei](https://travel.japanvoyage.jp/travel_destinations/mount-yotei): Hokkaido, Mountain. A 1,898 m volcano with a near-perfect cone, called Ezo Fuji, that rises alone above Niseko and Kutchan. Four trails reach the crater rim in a little over four hours each way, and the round trip can take 10 hours with no water anywhere on the mountain.
